Clipper 1.8t w/auto?

Post

Hey fellas,

A big hello from Dubai. New to the forum here.

So I just picked up a 1992 MK1 Cabriolet for the wife to drive around town. The car has the auto gearbox which she was happy with. She can't drive stick and refuses to learn so I'll have to live with it.

The car has the stock 2H motor in it for now and I was looking to get a little more power out of it and considering swapping it out for the AEB or AWP 1.8T engines.

I'll need to keep the auto gearbox. Has anyone on the forums done this on the golk MK1?

I've been digging round the forum for the last few weeks and couldn't find much info. the 20v conversions are covered plenty but all of them go with a manual gearbox.

I've seen the Vanagon people have swap in 1.8Ts and EJ25s with the stock 010 gearbox (so I think they can take the power and torque). I even got in touch with Kennedy Engineering to see if it  would work. Still waiting for a response.

It'd be great to hear from anyone who's attempted to do this.

the original gearbx would bolt on, but you would have to figure out how to get the control cables hooked up.

for a more modern box you would need to find or make a gearbox mount bracket for it, no big deal.

but the main issue might be the driveshafts. i would assume the differential will be wider/moved vs normal mk1/2/3 auto box? if so this means you'll need to find different shafts, possibly requiring custom ones made.

2nd issue the speedometer might also be a problem, its possible the mk4 type gearbox are electronic drive and so you would need different clocks as well, but I'm not sure on that either
