Post

Hi all I know it's not a golf but I thought  I would ask the question here.As there are a lot of experts on here. Am I right in thinking I can use all the guides from here for a 20v conversion as the set up for the scirocco and golf are the same driveshafts mounts etc etc thanks dan

Not all axles are the same.
There are 2 styles of Axles over the years, a 90mm and a 100mm.

The spindles are different between them.

A 90mm axle will fit the 100mm spindle, but not the other way, the 100mm axle will usually have to be ground around to fit, or may not fit at all.

I have taken 90mm axles and used them in my Cabby (93) when I installed a TJ 010 transmission.

I have heard of horror stories of folks having to grind the ridges off of some replacement axles as the outer ends are different on the rebuilds they installed.

The axles sizes are determined but the diameter of the inner joint where it meets the Trans/axle.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Ok so the driveshafts may be different can you just buy suitable driveshafts or can swap the flanges on the gear box to match your stock shafts. I was planning just to use the box from a Mk4 golf

yes a scirocco is a mk1 golf, so all the guides apply.

most mk4 02j gearboxes have 108mm flanges, so you have to swap them for lower power mk4 100mm, or later 02a ones which are bolt fitting same as the 02j. then you need MK1 100mm shafts to bolt up to it. If your box is a 6 speed its an entirely different kettle of pain in the rear to deal with, custom shafts, different brackets etc so most just change it for a 5 speed jobber.

you will already have the right bearing carriers for 100mm shafts unless its a really early car, the bigger units were fitted to all cabrio and scirocco made after 1984 regardless of what engine was fitted. Even the smaller engine cars still used mk2 golf CV joints which are all larger 90mm or 100mm, hence the need for more clearance in the bearing carrier.

even if you have the earlier ones you sometimes have no problem fitting 100mm shafts, it comes down to the make of the outer CV joint as some are smaller than others on the outside. Its possible they were getting a lot of customer returns becasue they 'didnt fit' and so redesigned the tooling to stop this

Anyway its easy to identify if you have the larger ones or not:
