Question about braking system.

Post

I have read up all I can find on upgrading the brakes on my 1993 mk1 clipper. Standard 239 mm front disk and rear drums.
I have acquired a 9" mk2 16v servo plus a 22. mm master cylinder and am ready to reinstall.
My question is regarding the two rear brake resistor valves screwed into the original master cylinder. Part numbers thereon:
1292G on one and 127G2 and a 2 on its side on the other
Other markings are 3 arrow down and 35. Like 3v35.

After significant searching, I have been unable to find anything with similar part numbers but have seen mention of mk 1 rear brake restrictor valves needed for 19.8 mm master cylinders.
I have also seen mention of restrictors being required when upgrading to rear disks, to stop locking up. As at present, still using drums but upsizing to 22.2 cylinder do I reuse the restrictors, or not?

Another point for anyone attempting to remove the Clovis pin on the linkage, I had nowhere seen mention of the type of locking mechanism spring clip on the pin.
This needs to be sprung open to remove, easy if you know what it is but being so well hidden and working by touch, this knowledge may help someone. To replace, pushing a small Allen key in to keep it open helps considerably, easy to pull out after fitting.
Another question though is, where is the felt washer supposed to be fitted.

Question about braking system.

I've just done the exact same conversion a week ago Paul on my 1990 cabby I buffed up and reused the valves as I was advised too .I've upgraded the front discs but kept the rear drums .well replaced them all new and my brakes are a lot better mate also fitted a reconditioned brake bar and new reservoir. I'm really happy with the results

Not sure if you can see my 2 valves are both coming off the right side to the original brake lines

Hi Deano777, off topic a bit but just have a question, I notice that you've removed the swirl pot and got rid of the fuel return back to the tank, I assume you have a Weber carb fitted, do you have any problems running like this? I fitted a Weber carb a while back and had to fit a fuel restrictor on the return, a welding tip was used, without the restrictor the car would stall all the time, I considered doing the same as you but wasn't sure about completely doing away with the return, cheers, Dave.

Question about braking system.

Hi dave yes bought a brand new Weber and as theres no return on it I did away with it all the way back to the sender under the back seat .just capped it off there and its run fine mate. When I had the pierburg on i had the same issue
I fitted a new mechanical fuel pump and after that it kept cutting out under acceleration. As with you the return was taking it back before the carb could get at it. I was told to try a welding tip but I didn't.  so I did away with it even then .and had no issues either with the pierburg or the Weber. Although the Weber is miles better .got  it dynod the other day 106.9bhp .not bad for a 29 year old car with the original engine .that came with 88bhp from the factory. So no issues mate at all.also fitted braided stainless steel hose front to back too want expensive about £8 per metre only needed 3 metres from McGill motorsport…

Thanks for the quick reply mate, that's really interesting and really good to know that you've had success with this setup, I've only had my car a couple of months, bought as a non runner due to cutting out every 5 mins, it already had a Weber fitted but it was in such a state I decided to replace it with a new one, it ran better but still not great, after fitting the welding tip it seemed a whole lot better. I also went through 3 filters until the fuel ran clear, they kept clogging up with rust, the filter has been clean for a couple of hundred miles now so seems ok, the only issue I have is that sometimes when the fuel tank gets down low it can splutter a bit, probs clean the tank out in the winter.

The concern I had about removing the return is over feeling, I thought the carb may flood if the fuel can't go anywhere, seems like it's not an issue given your success.

106bhp, very impressive, nearly a gti  ;)

Question about braking system.

Sounds like you've done well in a few months any pics mate ? I've had mine 16 months it's my daily my only car …I'm a bit OCD on fuel filters anyway there so cheap and everytime mines a bit dirty i just throw a new one on.ive had a led torch in my tank looks ok .but to be honest I want a new one it's the only bit of the entire fuel system i haven't replaced.as its dropping the rear axle etc… My tuner guy said the Weber is self regulating so it wont over fuel .and as he did the co2 etc the levels were good it was actually  running a bit lean..did you buy a Weber 32/34dtml ?

I'll get some pics up soon, it already had the 32/34 dtml fitted when I bought the car, I tried servicing the carb with one of Weber's kits, plus I changed the rubber manifold as it was a bit cracked, even after a service it still spluttered at full tilt, lift off a bit and all was fine, think it had some hard gunk stuck somewhere as the new one cleared that problem. Just done 150 miles today, ran fine until the fuel got a bit low, then felt it juddering a bit, no stalling though, lift off a bit and it seemed to clear, I'm assuming it's still a bit starved of fuel occasionally, the filter still looks clean though.

I sort of assumed that given these cars have a mech fuel pump that a return is still needed, I'll deffo try temporarily capping the return and see what happens, thanks for the info, really appreciated.
