MK 2 dash fitting! Help plz

Post

Having problems with column.

Installing a CE2 box and loom so thought I'd go with a MK 2 dash for good measure … what a bloody nightmare!

I've got to the point where the dash sort of fits with a lot of squish but now that's throw up another issue, the MK 2 stalks don't fit on the MK 1 column so the million dollar question is how easy does a MK 2 column fit or can a MK 2 ignition housing (the cast steel housing that holds the ign. barrel and mounting points for the stalks) be fitted to a MK 1 column?

Any help or direction gratefully received.

Interesting idea.

What about un pinning the wires from the mk2 loom and adding the blocks for the mk1 stalks etc?

Might be the easiest way  O_o

There's a couple of reasons for my route, 1 the interior is/was brown :0 and 2 the dash was far from great condition/loose/rattled etc. On top of that I didn't want to repin/cut the CE2 as it's in A1 condition. I've just got to suss out connecting it to the BAM loom!

Spoke to VW H and they have the steering lock in stock (£15) so panic over, well over when I work out what plugs in where lol.

A quick update just in case anyone would like the info.
Dash is now in and fixed, holes drilled in the bulkhead for the 2 threaded studs on the MK2 dash front.
I cut out a long V from the under side in an upward direction so the ends of the dash could be pushed in and fit.

I'd read in several places that new brackets will be needed but I got away with only 1 in the lower centre area, the 2 main side brackets I bend so they were out of the way while I was juggling/fitting the dash and the when I was happy i removed the air vents and with a brass rod and a big mallet bent them back so the touched the dash, holes drilled through the end panels and screw used into the OE bracket.
Job done.

Oh yeah, the large bracket that holds the steering column has to be cut halfway through and bend inwards to allow the clocks to fit, I'll weld a plate across the cut to put back the strength.

CE1 mk2 stalks fit mk1 lock housing, and late mk2 stalks look the same as ce2. the wiring plugs on ce1 mk2 same as mk1 though so wire splicing is required, but at least you can keep the mk1 lock housing and column ;)otherwise with a ce2 lock housing you have to cut off the tab on the column and re-weld in a different position, or just leave it off

Many Thanks John,
I'm amazed at the level of knowledge you have and the amount of people you help, it is very well received.

I've ended up with MK 2 housing/stalks with the lug cut from the column.

Yep John is quite simply amazing but I think I may have an idea why! 👍🏼

When he was born his dear mum put him straight on the bottle.
He was fed on the official VW workshop manuals liquidised until he left school. 😉

He is a walking talking encyclopedia of Golf's and God knows what else.

John was made 'Member of the Year 2013' and award for services to our community, which was more than well deserved and an award that's not given out all that often. He should probably deserve it ever year. 😉

One of the reasons why I mention this is because I was totally surprised at this year's AGM I was awarded this great honor for 2017.

Now I was totally choked up when I received the trophy not only because of my wife being there and the fact that the club really appreciated the effort I put in.
But my first thought was of John aka rubjonny and the fact I've joined an elite club of members which with people like him and Anna aka CabrioAnna although I'm uncomfortable in such company to be honest.

I know I've hijacked your post a bit but I hope a few members read it and like you can really appreciate what we do behind the scenes as we have something special at this club! 😉

I do get a little frustrated when members have had a problem that they can't solve and we rally round sometimes going to great lengths to help them and don't even get a thank you, let alone a 👍🏼in the header of the post! 😕

Right then, never meant to write that much so I'll get off my soap box and back on topic. ☺️👍🏼

I'm pleased things are working out for you and your Mk1. 👍🏼

Silly question but can I install the MK2 loom and CE2 board and anything that's not being used just leave the plug loose hanging from the loom or will somethings need shorting or resistors, It looks like loads of "stuff" isn't going to be used, thinks like heated seat/mirrors, electric windows etc etc

mirrors and window looms will split off if they're there, same goes for the heated seat looms. these were all options so you may not have any of the wiring for them anyway. if they are there you'll want to strip them out so you can sell them on, in particular heated seat loom is worth a fair bit ;)

Cheers RJ but I just want it back on the road so if it will run with the plugs left on then that's how it's staying!

I've pulled all the plugs from the engine/radiators/fans etc as I was hoping to be able to remove the engine and  compartment loom and ship it or take it to someone to sort out but the hole in the rain tray isn't large enough to pass the connectors through so the million dollar question is  What do I do now?

As I see it I have a few of options;

1 Take the car to a local lay by and set fire to it and claim on my insurance.
2 Trailer it to someone who will be able to sort it out with all the wiring still in the engine compartment.
3 Cut the main ECU loom in half so I can remove it from the car and sent/take it to someone who will deal with it on a bench.

its unlikely it had those options anyway, especially heated seats. electric mirrors are rare enough

you pull the loom thru the other way silly, it comes out into the engine bay ;)

If only RJ if only :'(The hole in the rain tray is approx 25mm give or take a mm and there is no way the BAM ecu plugs are going through that hole!

I'll see if I can upload a picture.

ah I see, well what you do for the mk4 plugs is slide out the purple lock tab from the end, then the main pin holder strips pop out the back. then usually you can squeeze the plug through :)

If it still wont go then theres another tab on the other side for the thicker wires, if you pull that out you can carefully pop the pins out with the aid of a pick tool

the alternative is strip the tape right back, and locate all the splice points from the MK4 loom to the main mk2 bay side, cut them then pull it all thru the other way. The loom builder is gonna have to do this anyway so its no big deal
