Ignition mod

Mk4 ignition loom to mk1 connector

Hey guys, I'm hoping rubjonny can see this or anyone else that might know

I'm in the middle of doing the wiring behind the mk1 jetta's
Dash, basically the mk4 loom is installed in the car, but it's keeping the orginal steering column and dash switches, one of the problems I've got is the 7 pin mk4 connector for the ignition switch which has terminal 15/30/75 etc
I want to remove the connector and heat shrink it onto the mk1 ignition connector so it plugs on to the original ignition switch

Can anyone help me on the wiring mod please?
Things to help are, it's a mk4 golf pd130 manual so there's no starter inhibitors and the reader coil is going to be located else where as a secret immobiliser 😉

I've managed to use rubjonnys technical information from his signature to sculpt this but terminal 75 and 86S (radio) I'm a tad unsure which wire they should connect to? Hopefully this helps …… helping me lol

Both terminal 30's got to the mk1 terminal 30
Terminal 15 goes to 15
P goes to P
Terminal 50b for the starter goes to 50

Thank you so kindly for replying John, I have to admit your link in your signature is a god send! All the wiring diagrams I could ever need! Thank you for your kindness :-D

I figured I'd say I've installed the complete mk4 loom into the car… silly I know but it's fitted and works, means all electronics are ecu or relay controlled etc

I've managed to sort the wiring for the wipers stock except fast speed doesn't work, I remember position 1 is intro, position 2 is off, position 3 is wipers on at normal speed but position 4 which should be top speed is slightly slower than normal speed and the motor groans, the wiring isn't mixed up! Any ideas what's wrong?
It's got the mk4 motor and mk4 loom

Also would you have a link to the front and rear fog light switch wiring diagrams? All I can find is L20 (front fog connector in the engine bay) and L22 (connection for rear fog in the boot) I've checked and that's all I can find

Can you shed any light on this please?

if you're using the mk1 stalks that could be why, I think the mk4 wiper relay needs the mk4 stalk to work properly as it has the speed adjuster built into it for intermittent and 1 less wire to the motor.

what you may need to do is use a mk1/2/3 19 or 99 plus possibly run an extra wire to the motor, though you might be able to use the 19/99 relay to trigger the mk4 relay somehow… let me have a look into it some more ;)for the fog light system you have a relay separate from the fusebox if you have front fogs installed, otherwise the rears are just fed direct from the headlight switch. the diagram you're looking for is 'g4foglights.pdf' :)

The only wire that isn't being used is the green/black wire at the moment but seeing the wiring diagram, it should go to the wiper washer relay, also on the mk4 side of the loom, the only wire not used on it is the brown earth wire???  Everything else had a match bar them two

the green/black on the mk1 stalk isnt used terminal 53e 'brake winding', and on the mk4 wiper motor the grey/black ignition live isnt used, it still has an earth

for the mk1 stalk the other c olours are the same except the  MK1 green goes to the mk4 white/green, and the green/black isnt used (dont mix up the mk4 green/white and white/green!!)

Thanks for your help John, I've been flat out after work sorting the other looms and mk1 switches, now the headlight switch, front and rear fog light switch, demister switch, wiper switch (within reason) aswell as screen wash, high/dip beam switch all work perfectly, about 200 heatshrinks later lol

My next issue is now the hazard light switch, I'm keeping the mk4 switch with no choice as the relay is built internally into it as you know, would you know if it's possible by just splicing in the mk1 loom section to the mk4 hazard light switch which will be tucked behind the dash so by switching on the mk1 switch, the hazards will function as normal ?

Many thanks matey :-D

So I've managed to figure it out, it helps remembering that the pin 49 is separate from the mk1 connector 😅

Terminal 15 goes to pin 7

Terminal 30 goes to pin 8

L to L

R to R

31 goes to brown earth

58b goes to 5

you dont have to use the mk4 hazard switch, with a little effort you can wire up the mk1 relay no problem all the feeds you need are there in the mk1 and mk4 harness just need to add a relay holder somewhere. the mk4 hazard switches are prone to failure, so be sure to hide it somewhere accessible ;)

Thanks John, I know what you mean about the mk4 Hazard switch issue, I've got a spare if it comes to it. Since it's working perfectly and I've got 2 months basically to finish the car, I'm going to leave it tucked away! Thank you for your patience 😉
