It all depends on what you have now.

if you have 100mm axles and purchase a 90mm axled tranny, you need new Differential seals and swap the mounting cups over from your old to your new.

If you have 90mm axles and are swapping over and the diff on the new tranny has 100mm axles new seals and swap your cups over.

If you have 90mm axles currently and want a total swap, then you will need spindles off of a 100mm car.  The 90's will fit and run in 100mm just fine, but the 100mm will not work as a direct fit in 90mm spindles with out major Grinding of the final outer stub.  Which is why swapping over to the 100mm spindles is easier and makes future axle replacement painless.

How to measure them is that you take a string around the axle at the diff mating and if it is 11" you have 90mm  If it is over 12" then you have 100mm  www.brokevw.com tells you all about the cups and size measurements.

On the vwvortex.com Cabriolet forum a man named Molijnar steps you through the swap on a LHD step by step on a CIS Cabriolet.
