Fitting coilovers!!

I have recently brought coilovers and i need to fit them! Is it pretty straight forward? It looks that way but i dont wanna mess anything up lol

Use a Magnetic Angle finder on the rotor to determine the Camber of the strut prior to removing, I usually write that number on the rotor.

Got the bigger one because my Eyes aren't as good as they used to be.  Also make sure that you get your strut tube in the same relative position in the spindle that the old one was prior to setting the Camber…. There is a lot of difference between camber in the Air or on the ground buy as much as 5 degrees.  Once it is on the ground, you can reset it to the value you have before you jack it up.


Be sure to get new mounts.
If you are using new mounts that are standard to VW.
then I have 2 ways to beef them up.

One is using 3m Window Weld to fill the gap in the mounts bottom (you must allow it to cure for about 1-2 weeks) a little more height, to standard and Tack weld the studs to the bottom of the mount, (I had one spin loose as I was tightening it and that caused me major pain until I figured that I could worm my wire welder up there and tack it….

I now do this to all my mounts prior to installation.

Hi. It's straight forward enough. As Brian says, new mounts. Plenty of Copa Slip on reassembly and a decent set of Spring Compressors !

Well Spring compressors are needed if you are going to take them apart to replace the mount, or change the cartridge…. If the coil over assemblies are fully assembled (with top mount) then they aren't needed.

Here is my how do I do that for Struts, it shows you a set of spring compressors.

It is Straight forward in to removing them, but the front spring can cause serious bodily harm if removed improperly.
Unlike the rears that compressors aren't needed.

There are many types of spring compressors, but I find the 2 part ones easiest to use off the car.

Just be sure that you take them down equally.

He'll need Spring Compressors to remove the Shocks that are already on the Car.

You only need the compressors to remove the mount/strut cartridges after they are off the car, you can  safely remove the struts from the car wether you remove them via the separation and removal of them from the spindle or via the lower Ball Joint separation….

When I think coil overs I am thinking that they usually are sold as an assembly which is a whole hog install or removal, as if that is the case, then compressors aren't needed.

The whole unit is removed, he's fitting coilovers. 

I'd understand that if he was changing his springs.
