Conversion Wiring Loom

Post

Hello, I was just wondering if either there's anyone on here or someone on here who knows of someone / a reputable company who would be able to sort a conversion wiring loom out for me?

I've got the main / full loom from a 1.1l carbed MK1 Golf (1984), I'm in the process of fitting a Corrado (1994) 2.0l 16v 9a engine in the car running kawasaki ZX9R bike carbs.

The MK1 wiring loom is the blade fuse type. I also have what I believe is the engine loom and ECU from a MK2 Golf 16v GTI (KR).

I basically need the two spliced together. I'm not brilliant with electrics and don't trust myself to sort this.

Any help / recommendations greatly received!

no need to splice anything chap, just drop the 16v ecu loom in and plug it in then same way as it is on the mk2. you'll need a mk2 coil as well, plus the tci unit if you dont have one already.  Also you need to add another single pin black temp sensor, your old engine should have one. put it where the white 2 pin one is on the 9a, this is for the ecu.

only thing is if your car had points ignition you need to cut off the purple./white wire and run a proper ignition live to your coil

1 - Earth to battery -ve
2 - KR ign controller plug
3 - TCI-H plug
4 - Black - KR ign controller & TCI-H ign live - terminal 15 side of coil
5 - Green - Coil trigger - terminal 1 side of coil
\- red/black - spade is for the isv control unit, the main wire is the rev counter feed
6 - Brown - Earth to cylinder head
7 - Blue/white - Temp sensor feed (use one of the 3 on the side of the head)
8 - Dizzy plug
9 - red/yellow - Fuel pump relay earth trigger
\- black/yellow - idle switch feed (12v feed with throttle shut, ignore for carbs)

Thanks for the reply, you make it all sound so very easy!

O
k so I've got a MK2 coil and tci unit. I assume it's fairly obvious how / where the MK2 loom and ECU will connect into the existing wiring!?

Yeah it did have points so I'll look to run a new wire from the ignition to the coil, this will need to be fused I suppose?

yeah once you get a 16v loom compare it to my picture above and it'll be easy :)

with the ignition live feed factory its unfused but there is no harm in having one as long as its big enough to cope.  on a ce1 fusebox it is fed from D/23 with a 1.5mm2 gauge wire, you can get fresh pins here ref 3-1564:
Terminals for Special Applications: Polevolt Ltd

alternatively G spade 2 or 5 will do you fine

Awesome cheers for all your help, feel fairly confident tackling this now, I'll see how I get on, if I come up against any problems I'll post them here, thanks again!

Ok so finally managed to get some time on the wiring today, started with this:

And now have this:

Just have a few questions:
1) On No. 5 there's the red/black wire with spade connection to the isv control unit, as I'll be running bike carbs I assume I won't need this?
Obviously the other red/black wire for the rev counter feed will need to connect with the rev counter wire in the MK1 loom, do you know what colour the wire in the MK1 loom might be?
2) On No. 7, the blue / white wire, does this need to be connected to any particular sensor on the side of the head, i.e. is one better than the other, or can it be connected to any one? Also I assume I'll be able to  connect whichever sensor that isn't connected to the KR loom to the original MK1 loom?

Also this is probably a really stupid question but what's the green dial on the side of the KR ECU do exactly, if anything!?!?

1. no this isnt required, you just need the 2 spades from the ecu loom black and black/white live and green earth to the coil.

the red/black in the double plug is the car side of the coil earth, you will be using your old red/black wire for this

2. the top left hole as you look at the side of the head is a blind hole, so you can remove that one and keep for spares.  If you want it like factory the bottlm left hole is for the ecu, and top right for dash :)

just make sure both are black collar single pin spade temp sensors people often fit white oil temp sensors thinking they are the same but they aren't.  They should all the same rating, and they are the same as the mk1 golf dash temp so yes the old red/yellow dash wire will go straight on and work.

you can test all the sensors by switching the mk1 red./yellow wire between them when its warmed up, if any read incorrect on the gauge then bin.

the green dial is the 'procrastination ring' it keeps idle fingers busy

Ok so just a couple more queries……………………………..

I've swopped part of the the mk1 loom for the corrado (1993 2.0l 16v 9a) loom (to the radiator fan in the engine bay) as there are three connectors on the corrado loom rather than 2 on the mk1 loom. There are however 3 connectors from this loom which pass into the car, these are:
  • Red / white
  • Brown / white
  • Red and black / yellow
Question is can I utilise these wires in any way or can I remove them? Will the fan still work if I remove them?
Also included in this section of loom are 2 No. block connectors to fuses, should I retain or remove these?

The high pressure oil switch (yellow wire) and low pressure oil switch (blue / black) connect to what on the original mk1 loom or do i need to add separate gauges?

The original (1983 1100cc) mk1 loom has a black wire running to the carburettor, I'm running Kawasaki ZX9R bike carbs, do I connect this to them somehow!?

There is a connector on the top, front of the gearbox (02A) with 2 No. wires, colours:
  • < >Black / blue
  • Black
I assume I need to connect these wires to the 2 similar coloured wires in the mk1 loom which previously connected to the underside of the original gearbox?

    MK1 loom had 2 No. wires running to the starter motor;
  • < >Red/ black
  • Black
the connector from the corrado started motor has a red / black wire however no black wire, what do I connect the black wire from the MK1 loom to?

There are 3 No. wires from the MK1 loom running to various sensors on the engine, wire colours are:
  • < >Yellow / red
  • Green / black
  • Yellow
Can these be connected to anything on the corrado engine?

Also there is a random connector on the MK1 loom which I'm not sure what it connects to, wires are:
  • < >Blue / brown
  • Brown
What can I / do I connect this to?

the extra plugs are part of the corrado rad fan contro0l unit wiring, you can bin all of that off if you liek and go back to how mk1/2 are, which is live to thermoswitch and 2 wires from switch straight to the fan, plus an earth to fan

oil pressure switches look fine ,though you may have to swap the 2 wires over if the oil warning system goes funny

black wire to carb is probably an ignition live for the carb heater or over-run valve or something, not needed. put it to one siude though, you may need it for your coil!

2 pin on box is reverse switch, this connects to the 2 pin spade plug you have in your hand if not already run back to the fusebox in the 9a loom

red/black is the cranking live to the starter motor, the black wire is related to the points ignition so can be binned

yellow/red is dash temp, it goes to the small black sensor on the side of the head

green/black is oil temp, goes to the white sensor on the rear of the head

yellow looks to be oil pressure switch, though you already have those on the lump?

blue/brown and brown is probably the brake fluid level warning connector

Your an absolute legend thanks for all your help, I wonder just how many MK1's are on the road thanks to all your help!?

Right I'll look to strip the fan wiring right back to basics, so long as it cuts in when it should that's fine.

What I'll do then is connect the yellow wire from the MK1 loom to the high oil pressure switch wire (also yellow) from the oil filter housing and run the low oil pressure switch wire (blue/black) to a separate gauge in the car.

Slowly but surely I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel!!

Thanks again!
