02J 5spd is the most common & is what I have put on my Aum cabby conversion I’ve just finished, should be same as a caddy conversion. You can use the earlier O2A & the original boxes

So I could use the gearbox thats already on the engine? Would that not change the drive shaft size? Sorry this is all abit new to me,
Isn't the 02j a mk4 gearbox ? That's what the engine has come out of anyway all a bit of a head breaker to me 😂😂

Sorry just realised it's a auq engine not a aum does this make a difference with gearboxes? I'm told a 020j can bolt straight on and still use the drive shafts ?? Cheers

Your 6spd box is I think an O2M. If you want to fit that there are conversion kits out there for sale with suitable driveshafts but it will cost more than a 5spd O2J. Also if your caddy has 100mm driveshafts you can use them with an O2J box if you get the 100mm flange cups to mate the box to the shafts. If you’re very lucky some early O2J boxes even had the 100mm cups on them

Thanks for reply l, I want it to be as s Simple as possible as you can probably guess this is not my strongest subject. 😂 I think I'll get the 02j as that's seems to be the easiest way, so I should only have to change the throttle pedal rather than all this conversion business
Thanks for your help, I'm sure I'll be asking more questions as time goes on, apologies in advance if they seem stupid 👍🏻😂

Why change the throttle, I didn't & kept the dbw pedal. It just means removing the caddy pedal & bolting the dbw pedal to the floor, simple as that (you might have to extend the wiring that's all)

That's sounds like a plan easy bolt on!! This is so confusing, I've read the basic guide on here but half of it is French to me, I put the engine in on my caddy and built it from a rolling shell using   the 1.8 gti engine so I have a basic knowledge but that is  with older engines
And idiot guide would be appreciated if you have time, of things I'll
Have to change and things that go with what
I know about the the engine mounts
I now no aboutvyhe the throttle 😉
What about the gear linkage? I have rods at the mo but if I use the 02j thatvhas a wires correct ? Then there the ancillaries?? It's a mind field 😂

Only if you have time though 👍🏻

Remember all my info applies to a cabby, not a caddy, but I'm sure 99% of it will be the same. I'm sure you've read this already:

https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&type=misc&id=modifications-and_2%2F1-8t-conversion-guide_2

Gear linkage is easy, just use all the O2J cables & selector. I bolted the selector from underneath as I lowered the seating position with buckets. Others have run the cables through the bulkhead to bolt the selector down inside.
Your AUQ ecu will need unlocking or the engine won't start, might as well get it remapped at same time
Your first job should be to remove your caddy loom & send it off with the AUQ loom (both parts, ecu & engine loom) to be converted - I recommend rubjonny
Downpipe - rarely they come up for sale, don't know anyone who makes them now, qpeng have stopped doing them. You could buy the K03 flange & fabricate, or cheapest option is probably buy a used decat mk4 downpipe & cut & weld. 3" & you'll have to remove the steering column boot as it'll melt, 2.5" worked for me
Exhaust - I fitted a supersprint 60mm race exhaust with a 2.5” inlet universal backbox. Check out trackslag website for more ideas
Intercooler - merc sprinter or eBay jobbie
Engine - fit 16v tensioner & spacer along with new timing belt kit, thermostat & water pump before fitting into the bay. Junk the pas pump& buy shorter Alt belt

Legend, cheers for that, I almost understood all the words you used as well 😂, funny you should mention the steering boot melted one of them with my four branch manifold when in first installed my 1.8 , had to make a heat shield like the space shuttle 😂, starting  it all next weekend so see how I go, thanks again for taking the time to translate everything 👍🏻

Ask any questions you like mate. If you find down-pipe is too close to boot easy option is wrap it with an old turbo jacket
