Why does adding custom alloys to my VW increase the insurance from £1200 to £2100?

Post

I originally got a quote for a stock MK1 golf at £1200, which was very reasonable. However the minute I add custom alloys to the insurance policy it increases by £900 to £2100, almost doubling? I'm assuming it's because they are stereotyping the type of driver that would put custom alloys on their car as being a 'boy racer' so would be a dangerous driver for them to insure. Is there anyway I can get past this apart from having to have a few years no claims on the car before upgrading?

Cheers

Sorry Alex, no short cut I'm afraid! It's daft that they've added so much just for alloys, but mods always means more money.

It makes me laugh, you could upgrade suspension and brakes substantially and make the car handle and stop better than original, yet they don't charge you less for having a safer car!

Just a fact of life I'm afraid, get some more no claims in and then think about wheels!

Okay that's a real shame, but thank you anyway. And yes I agree, crazy world we live in, but hey that's life. Looks like my dream of owning a custom mk1 golf will have to wait a few more years then.

don't quite understand how you think the original quote of 1200 notes is reasonable…… that's a hideous amout for insurance, where are you living in a war zone??? I pay just over 300 for mine fully comp and I thought that was a lot!!

Not just because they think you are a boy racer, if your car got stolen you would no doubt want to claim for the new alloys, that's easily a thousand pounds (depending on wheels/tyres) on top of the price of the car. Its also more desireable/stealable  now.

As above really……

£1200 is good for first insurance, thats what i paid for my first insurance premium back in 2006.
Ive heard stories of over £2000+ on a corsa.

You can try the classic insurers but they tend to all say that they wont touch if you a) car is daily or b) youre under 25

Try tesco, you can get discount for using your clubcard + loads of points too.

As for rise in premium I think they class your car as higher risk with alloys ie more likeley to have wheels stolen/more likely to be broken into or stolen as it looks more desireable etc.

They will probably charge more for "modifications"

When i was phoinging round getting quote on the clipper one joker on the phone tried to class a new expansion tank as a modification because it wasnt the origiional one lol

yeah I wanted mine on a classic policy but as mine is a daily driver I couldn't…. don't quite understand why that would make the slightest bit of difference, insurers are strange… what if you only ever wanted a classic car as a daily driver???

It does and doesn't make sense which has been mentioned above.
But as your title states 'Custom Wheels' (which are expensive) and then you go on to talk about a 'Classic Policy' for the car as a daily driver.
(sorry to say it but a MK1 is not a "Classic" yet)
Also we don't now what spec the car is.
We don't know how old you are, no claims, etc…
Fully Comp or TPFT.

Now they (the insurance company) have or should have that Info and will go back fairly often to 'Insurance Underwriters' who don't know a Golf from a Gopher.

YES their adding the cost of the wheels.
You can't have it both ways I'm afraid.

The last time I checked Insurance Companies were registered for VAT and not for Charity.

But trust me I am no fan of them either and where I live (Vienna, Austria) The crime capital of the world.
I should mention I've just turned 50 (hold the jokes please) I've been driving for 33 years and have never had a claim against me.
3 points on my license for doing 34 in a 30 about 1,000 years ago. You could say I just don't get caught!
I pay about 600 GBP for TPFT for 6 months that the car is on the road, stored over winter and it has a 'Cat1 Thatcham alarm system' and no 'MOD's'!
(I actually live outside the City in 'Lower Austria' by one mile)

Shop around mate is my best advice.
Or flog the wheels if you think 1200 is good deal but I do feel for you and yes it's madness gone mad.
