Could someone tell me if i'm missing something please?! I've been looking to get a mk1 for years but i'm now in a position to do so. I dont have to commute to work at all and so the car will only be used on weekends and to be honest not even that. I'm looking at a resto project to take to shows when i'm done.
But, when i try to get a classic car insurance most places wont insure me because i dont have an "every day" car even though i have no need for one - I live in London and have a tube/bus pass. I'm 27 with a license for 10 years and 10 years no claims but the lowest quote I've had is £557 which I think is a bit too expensive for me to take - this was on a standard Golf Clipper I was tempted with.
Am I missing a trick here or does anyone know of a classic car insurance company that wouldnt need the "every day" criteria?
Cheers for any advice.

I opted to go with Tesco Car insurance as they were £300 cheaper than any classic.
Try Carol Nash though the last quote I done was quite reasonable (link on left hand side)

Used it for work too with business use, so had a standard policy with Adrian Flux, cost was around £360 paying monthly.
I was 31 when I got the car, with full no claims. I would of thought you should be looking at the £300 or less to insure. Being a paid member of this club will also help with discount on your insurance

Yes some state you must have acsess to another car.
Is there another car in the house hold you could be insured on sepaerately or would the costs outweigh the benefit.?

So rung around today. It would appear that a combination of me living in london and not having an everyday car my Insurance is going to be sky high!
One person quoted me over £2k for a policy that was limited to 4,000 miles a year!!
Unfortunately it looks like my desire for a mk1 cabriolet is going to have to be supressed for a couple of years then as I cant really afford to fork out the running costs for one and slowly work on it too.

Unfortunately it's an old car that's easy to steal, has no crash protection and is expensive to repair. It's also desirable. That's why they they're expensive to insure.
I have a heavily modified Derby and slightly modified cabby and the cabby is more to insure. It's also not more than 21yrs old so is only 'old' not a classic yet!
I'd have expected you to be able to insure it for around £500 as an everyday car for everyday use. just limit the mileage to 3k a year and put a large excess on the policy this will help to ring down the cost.
I;m with RHS or something similar can't quite remember now (must be getting old!) they're quite good (£132 for the year)
Hope that helps a bit.

How much were you expecting to pay?

Cheers, I kinda only really budgeted for about £400 max - only because I had a BMW 323 E30 series when I was 21 and paid £450 with unlimted mileage for that so a little suprised it was higher. To be honest if I find summat thats worth it I might just take the hit and invest in a decent alarm to try and lower it a bit for next year.

Also bear in mind the BMW policy was 6 years ago, prices have gone through the roof since then. Have you had other cars since then? I have been advised previously that NCB only lasts 3 years 'between' policies.

I have used Lancaster Insurance for classics before and they were very good. Don't forget to check the mainstream insurers though as it's all about risk of damge and theft etc so a low mileage policy on an older car might suprise you with lower premiums.

Sorry I didnt make it clear, I had the E30 up untill the other year and the most i paid was £450 when i first got it. Did only pay £340 when i lived in a real real rough place, but moved to a better area and it seems to be higher Insurance wise
Yeah not been driving for just over 6 months now and the main reason i want another motor is so i dont lose my no claims and because im going insane without a car!!

I would definately try the main stream providers then for the best deal.
