Bishop Calloway Quote

Online Quote

I thought I would run the quote again on their website as sometimes it is cheaper because of this alone. I put in all the details in the boxes. It does not ask if there are any modifications on their website nor is it in the small print. It does not ask if there is an alarm. I have now got a quote for £89.80! This is 3000 limited miles, Garaged, Another driver over 25 can drive. They also have a free agreed value. All I have to do is send 2 pics of the car. The engine is the original on the car and everything is stock, apart from the BBS wheels and the clipper kit. The BBS wheels are the BBS RA so they are pretty much standard I would say as they came on the Golfs. Do you think I will be ok with this quote?

theres no such thing as pretty much standard, if it didnt come out the factory with those wheels then its a mod.

can you save the quote and phone them up and see if they will honour it after a full description of car?

A little hijack here but some people like myself might like a bit more clarification if possible.
Out of interest (not that this affects my insurance in anyway) but if the BBS were a factory standard on another MK1 like the Sportline (I have the wheels now on mine).
Now my Cabrio is a  August 1990 build but the Engine is down tuned to 98bhp and still be sold long after the start of production of the Sportline. Cosmetically different but the running gear pretty much the same.

Would that make my car classified as a 'Modified Car'?

"Your car must be in its original state and should not have been modified from the manufacturer's specification. Your car insurance company deals with the risk associated with your insured vehicle which it assesses with reference to the exact make, model and trim, then calculates an insurance premium based upon this (and other) factors. If your car has undergone changes the information they used as the basis of their assessment is inaccurate. If for instance the engine specification has been enhanced to increase the acceleration or top speed, your car could present a higher insurance risk, or if the bodywork has been amended, it may cost more to repair if making a claim. If your vehicle has been modified you need to consult your car insurance company with the exact modification to ensure they will accept the altered risk or find a specialist insurer."

The only mods you can get away with in my opinion are factory supplied options that were available and could of been applied to your car at the time.

So for example it was possible to order a standard GTI with all the campaign options. If your 1983 GTI had the leather wheel, p-slots, green glass, front fogs, sunroof etc I would not declare them. But if you added that lot to a 1978 car then I would declare them.

Jazman, in your case I am pretty sure that the "clipper kit" was never an option and that BBS RA's were only fitted to the Sportline model and were never an option. So you must declare them to be fully insured - I know many folks would not bother though …

Cheers,
Ade

That's my take on it Ade, if it was a 'Factory Option' for your model and at the time your car was in production.

This spring I will fit a pair of Hella smoked rear lights to mine.
But even though they are from Hella I will still have to get them approved and have it added to the documentation of the car as they were not a 'Factory Option!   :(

I have a 1984 Golf GL convertible. It has a clipper kit on it but I am sure it did not come as standard. Was it available at the time the car came out as an option from the dealers? I did an online quote with Bishop Calloway and got a great quote for £89. The website does not ask if the car has been modified. I rang them up and casually disscused it had a clipper kit on and BBS RA wheels. They now say the quote is going to double. It may stay somewhere near if the clipper kit was an extra. I explained that it is a VW original kit that is on all the MK1 Golf cabroilets post 1984. Does that mean that all the members on here getting online quotes from Bishop Calloway have 100% standard cars? I explained to the company why is it there is no mention that the quote is based on the car having no mods?. If there is no disclamer, then surley it people are taking insurance out with them assuming the car is insured at the price agreed, regardless of mods!

I'm sure there's a lot of people and not just MK1 owners that have a slight MOD or two and the insurance company will turn a blind eye to get the business.

But wait till they make a claim!  :P
Only then does the brown sticky stuff hit the big spinney thing!  :'(

I have my stainless exhaust, lowered suspension and air filter all declared.

But not better discs, hoses and steering wheel etc.

Just been quoted by Bishops, 46yo, '93 Clipper cabby, 3000 miles and £100 excess. Brake upgrade and 25mm lowering declared.

All for the princely sum of £89.80! And most importantly they allow SORN whilst remaining on full cover, unlike Admiral who I am currently with.

Result!!
