Adrian Flux questioning my requested value of my GTI. Opinions?

Post

hi
I am trying to get an agreed value on my mk1 Gti and have sent the relevant paperwork back once. Now they want to see my purchase receipt and receipts for any work I've done since owning to prove its worth.(can't really see why they are relevant!)
The car is a 1983 series2 GTI which has only covered a genuine 48k from new. It's in totally standard, original mint condition. Never restored and doesn't need it. I've owned lots of mk1's over the last 25 years so I thought I knew a bit about them, but this has annoyed me!
I'm asking for an agreed value of £10k which I personally think under values the car looking at prices of others, but as above they want more paperwork :-(
Just wondering what other people's thoughts are? Is £10k too much?
picture for reference;

There is a clue in the title of your post why you are having problems, clue the words begin with A&F.

My car just like yours totally original, although 99k miles insured through Carole Nash for £12500 without question. In fact I I am going to up this next year as prices seem to be rising.

BTW is this the car that was at Retro/dub show in Telford last month?

i 'd say you're selling it well short and should be valuing it at double that.

You need to collect, as evidence, adverts of similar ones for sale in the current market. - you'll soon realise that what you have is pretty special and would cost an awful lot to find a suitable replacement.

What you want from insurance is a like for like replacement should yours become a total loss plus the costs of looking for one collectioon etc etc. Why should you be out of pocket if someone nicks it.

I paid to have a professional valuation done on mine 3 years ago and i'm going to get it done again as i think my own is now undervalued. As part of the valuation report the adverts collected and other information become a source of agreeing the value.

oh and requesting for paperwork is irrelevant with prices rising by the month on mk1's.
You could have bought your mk1 five years ago and now be doubling your money without spending a penny on it.
Why are insurance companies so dumb?

I ditto all of the above and especially Yomp's last comment!

What you had done (if anything), when you had it done and what it cost is totally irrelevant as far as I can see.
If you had a full Pro Restro done for 5, 7 or 10k it's still irrelevant to the current value of the car.

Slightly different I know but when people spend a small fortune Modding there cars their lucky if they get there money back!

If I were you, I'd follow the advice in the previous posts and then look at other insurance Companies but do stick a much higher valuation on it because my opinion you are under valuing the car by a fair bit!

Good luck and do let us know how you get on.

First thing first.

Leave Adrian Flux they are a disaster.

There are lots of really good companies with miles better customer service.

Your car is worth way more than £10k for insurance purposes, I would be requesting £15k and when I get my values, I put a PowerPoint doc in with the application.

I have all the forms scanned and attached to it with the 6 or 7 mandatory pics but then I put in a collection of supporting info like show wins, mag features and lots more pics supporting the condition of the car. I haven't been refused my value so far.

The more info provided the better as 7 pics really shows nothing.

I am with Admiral on a multicar policy with my 2 dailys.
The classic agreed value policy gets you 10% of both your dailys and when it all works out my s1 valued at £10k costs £80 per year.

Chris I'm guessing that's fully comp.

Well if you want a laugh.
I can only get TPFT.
No agreed value.
Must come off the road for a minimum of 5 months a year.
Handing back the number plates.
Maximum 10k Km's in 7 months.

I'm over 50 and never had any accidents or convictions.
34 years of driving and in the lowest insurance group possible.

So what does it cost me to insure my 25 year old Golf I hear you ask?

Well would you believe me if I said that for 7 months insurance the best deal I can find in Austria is £420!

Well it's true sadly and yes it does hurt.  :'(
It's not the money so much but the principal that gets me.

God forbid my car was stolen the money from the insurance company wouldn't cover the cost of the original extras I've added to the car!

Thanks for the replies/comments.
I've just got off the phone with AF (40minutes!!)trying to justify the value. They said i can go on classic car valuations.co.uk or get a specialist to value it!! What a joke!! I'm now thinking of cancelling both of my policies with them because of this hassle(i also have a modded 20v mk1)

Update; just looked on classiccarvaluations and they want £125 for an online valuation and i presume a lot more for a 'proper' viewing valuation! This just gets better and better!! Not :-(

Well I'd take Massbad69 advice Chris.
Yes it's a pain in the butt to collect all the info but it will be worth it at the end of the day, no matter who insures it.

I'm also a big fan of voting with your feet.
So as you have other cars with AF I'd offer them as well to the new Company that are being a lot more sensible about the whole matter!

Who did you go with in the end?

I used AF when I was young and the Mk1 was my daily. They kind of target the "performance" magazine readers and don't really do proper classic policies.

Used Footman James since and they were far better. Users here say lots of good things about some of the other proper classic insures like those linked on the left too.
