solex mixture

Just a quick question, when turning the mixture screw inwards does this richen the mixture?

Strangely it doesn't say in the Haynes. Afraid I have a Weber car, but on that you screw in to weaken the mixture…

Usually turning the scrw in weakens the mixtire on carbs - don't know one of any make where this is not true.

Turing the screw inwards (or tightening it) will lean off the mixture because you are effectively closing the gap the fuel has to flow through.

The way to set it (if you don't have CO2 gear) is to let the engine get upto temperature and make sure it is idleing at a reasonable rate.

Turn the screw half a turn in own direction and let the engine settle for 15 seconds or so.  If the idle RPM has increased then turn it in the same direction again.  If it decreased, turn it back to where it was and then half a turn in the opposite direction.

Keep turning the mixture screw (the little one) in the direction that the idle RPM gains after a good few seconds of running.  You will reach a point where it will peak and more turns in that direction will cause the RPM to drop off again.  When it reaches this point, go back in the other direction so the idle is the fastest it can be based on mixture setting.

If the idle RPM gets too high during this procedure, adjust the idle screw (the bigger one) to drop it back to where it should be and leave it for a good few seconds before continuing.

Before doing any of this though it is worth checking that the top of the float chamber is nice and tight because if it is sucking in air through here is won't be possible to set mixture properly.

It is also worth checking that the rubber gasket that the carb sits on is in good condition and that the choke is not sticking on.  (Escpecially those awkward auto choke units).

i did all of this and then suddenly noticed that the rubber mount bewixt carb and maifold was pretty much in two pieces - so thats where the extra air was coming from.
