Best engine conversion for a 1.3 driver?

Hey im new to forum, just gettin into the mk1 dub scene. now ive finally bought the car i always wanted, but she needs some more bhp to match her booty? what do you think the best conversion would be? g40 mk2 gti  mk1 gti or more modern equvilant, like a mk3 gti 8v/16v? although you get bad problems with the speed sensor on the mk3, iv experience of that? im 19, but got 2 ncb? so…. cheers j

How about 2 x 1000cc bike engines? Imagine driving along in a mk1 at 16,000 rpm

Quite a lot mate, like tank and pump, possibly wiring? might be cheaper to buy a shabby GTI as a donor car or you can buy mine for ?1300

The mk2 16v lump is a popular choice for a mk1. plus there's probably more people around that have done that conversion than anything else. i think its the route i'd go down if i changed engines.
Did you ever see the Golf mag article this summer on the mechanical engineer teacher that stripped & lightened a white mk1 and put a 16v lump in? they had some pics from combe - the thing was soooo fast.

have you seen the prices of r32 engines….?!

probably a bit fat heavy and lazy for a mk1 ?

a properly tuned 1300 on twin carbs will be surprisingly quick…….steve matthews on here has one, and im about to do mine….hehehe….

How much hp/torque does that setup generate out of interest?

no idea to be honest, but the block is lighter anyway ( no idea by how much ) so if you can get 80-90hp out of one ( easy ) then you should have a pretty nippy car….obviously im going to want more than that eventually…..so i'd like to do a turbo…..and still have cheaper road tax…

ok

im liking the idea's lads. 1.816v mk2 wud be an obvious choice but im intrigued by this 1300 tuned up on twin carbs? seen as tho mines already a 1.3 and only covered 97,000 seems a good prospect, wot prices we looking at for a twin carb setup?? an r-32 out the question as im only 19 at the end of the day. so tell me more about the 1.3 tuned up!!

On a 1.1/1.3 mk1 you need to move the o/s engine mount1!! Wheres that welder!!!

I assume a G40 moor would more or less slide in???

MK2 GTi 16v

I think the g40 is more or less a slot in, although you have to change the gearbox mount ? i think…haven't looked into it much due to serious costage of the lump/box/loom/charger…

would be nice though, supercharger GROWL….
