I'd love to do something similar with a MK1 shell but I don't think I could bring myself to drill holes and put a towbar on the gti, so seems a little pointless being towed behind my daily car.

The genuine VW towbars require no drilling of the car at all - they replace the metal part of the bumper, the plastic part bolts to it and the whole lot bolts in the normal place to the car.
You can also get a Westfalia one where the towbar hitch is removable.
All second hand now but the VW ones often come up

… and there I was with the perfect excuse in my mind for not spending the time/money to build a trailer, and now it's all ruined  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:
