Speedo gears

Can anyone confirm there is a difference between speedo gears for 8V and 16V gearboxes? I assume there is a difference in number of teeth as the speedo scales are different. How many teeth on the 16V version?

I can't tell you how many teeth they have, but I believe the cables have colour coded gears for the different types of box?!? Agian, not sure which one fits what - sorry.

OK, I found out the gears are the same 15 teeth red/brown for 8V and 16V as the final drives are the same. Need someone to follow me to check my speed as I am sure it is reading wrong!

Dubbers,

Go on the motorway and drive at 79mph - if everyone is overtaking you your speed is probably right!  Follow some trucks also as they are normally limited to 56mph so a good ballpark also.  If you find a white van drive 2 inches from thier bumper (note correct spelling tallpete - betrter aftir a fiew bears) and check your speedo - if you are doing >89 mph, again speedo is correct.

For low speed calibration find some sort of wierd suzuki or matia or other eastern/indonesian make with one or two occupants who look a little elderly - also worth checking if they are local (use registration code) - and follow them in a 30mph zone - they will be either doing 40 (because they drive at 40 everywhere) or doing 18 to 20 mph (easy to work out 40 vs 20) and calibrate from that…

Hope this helps…not sure if it would stand up in a court of law!

Or I could also follow a 3 series BeeEm doing a ton in the outside lane until he comes across a police car in the inside lane at which point I will either get a good 70 reading or have lost my front end!

Try this mate….

http://www.nwlink.com/~vdb/vw/Transmission/speed-ratio.html

As long as you know the code of your gearbox, (or if you know all of the drive ratios) this will help.

Enter your tire size, the FD ratio then the gear, say 5th ratio. enter an RPM figure, say 3000 and it will tell you how fast you would be going.
Works great - assuming you got a working rev counter in the car.

I used this to produce a table of speeds at certain RPMs in a range of gears to test my speedo calibration.
