Rear spring replace

Hi,

This Sunday I intend to replace the cracked rear springs on my Cabrio. Got the spring compressors but only a Haynes Mk2 manual. Does the Mk1 and Mk2 rear set up differ?

HELP!!!!

Rear shocks and springs are pretty easy to change on both MK1 or Mk2 - Mk2 differs slightly but it is minimal.

Pretty obvious once youve had a good look.

Only real big problem that you may find is the lower bolt siezed solid in the shock absorber, very common, if that happens you will probably have to get a pair of new shocks in before you go any further, carefully cut the bolt either side of the shock with a hacksaw watching that you dont cut the axle then the shock should pull away (once you have undone the upper nut of course), may i suggest that you use some copper grease on the new bolt to help prevent it siezing again

I've changed my cabrios rear shocks and obviously removed the springs in the process. You dont actually need a spring compressor if you're careful, the haynes even tells you. But as you've got one you might as well use it as it was a bit daunting removing the nut without one.

If its a GTI make sure that when reassembling, the cut off part of the grey/white upper spring seat (you'll know what I mean) is in the outer position so there isn't a chance of it fouling on the tyre.

As crazy says, its a pretty straight forward job.

Cheers,

Ross

I replaced the rear shocks and springs a few weeks ago. Its really easy, I undone and removed the all the nuts then jacked up the rear. The top part of the shocks drops down, then tap out and remove the pins.
I used a spring compressor for caution before removing the cap. Takes about 30 minutes top each side.
