Mk1 Whining gearbox

Hi i have a Mk1 golf gti 1.6 and the gearbox has been whining for a while only when moving, even when i take it out of gear and let it free wheel. Would this suggest its something else causing the whine? Also i wish to change the gearbox oil but the haynes doe not tell me where the filler point is? 1 more thing sorry, what is the best oil to use?

Cheers

Whining noise

Hey mate,

I wouldn't be able to tell you if it was your gearbox or not really but i
would also consider your wheel bearings.

I have got a whining noise comeing from my rear bearings so they are in
the prosess of being replaised.

Hope i have helped you in anyway possible.

Jamie :D

I had this on my box, it soon gave up and got stuck in 4th gear could not even disengage it manually. i'd check your bearings then get the box rebuilt, i tried a couple of second hand boxes but ended up having it rebuilt you never can tell with a second hand gearbox.

get i t rebuilt and you know it isnt going to go wrong for some time.

Hi,

Had a whining gearbox to in my wifes caddy for over a year, … I wasn't going to spend money over a new gear box, because that would maybe give other problems. and gear change was no problem. the sound only came when pushing in the clutch pedal. and stopped when the box stopped turning, or when you lift your foot completely of the pedal.

Anyhow, it appeared to be a bearing that is accessible from the outside of the box, so was not expensive at all, the bearing is placed right behind the round green cap on the side of the box. haven't had time to find out exactly what it's use is, or what its name is (Patrick maybe  :D , Oh, funny me … ). But just thought I might post it since I wasn't able to find a real answer over this problem here.

Should anybody require more info, just drop me a message and I'll be back.

Cheers,

its called a thrust bearing. it allows the clutch shaft to continue spinning whilst you fiddle about changing gears with the clutch depressed. might be worth changing it as it's easy to do and cheap as chips. this shouldn't make a noise when the clutch isn't depressed though as its not spinning.

it can also be the main bearings on the diff where the inner cv on the drive shafts bolt onto the flanges……

If its only a little noisy without gear or clutch problems just change the oil at the minute…..the drain is a 17 or 18 mm allen key, i got one but cant remember the size!!! (Hazzet do the correct tool) but you can buy a socket with the correct size from halfrauds, the drain is also the filling point, take the plug out on the narrow front part of the gbox and let it drain, then just refill with a decent hypoid gbox oil untill the level begins to flow out the hole again…..not an exact science i know but its all i have ever done on all my Gti`s and had no problems, you can also buy a slick 50 treatment or wynns do a gear lube aswell……..new oil on its own always helps though, makes the box more possitive, it might be whining as it dont have enough oil in now?
