Huge bang when going over a bump or a small pot hole in road

My clipper makes a really loud bang  8O  when it hits a little bump or pothole, even going really slow. Its really bad coz i live out in the sticks (uneven roads)!
It cant be normal, it feels like the bottom of the car has just hit something coz its so loud.
Any ideas anyone :dontknow: , im guessing its the suspension?

is the car lowered?

could be the exhaust , bottom balljoint, bump stops if lowered

what do you see under the car?  is there anywhere it looks like its been in contact with the road?  any other obvious signs of broken suspension etc? where's the bang coming from..like rear… front, front drivers side etc…?

It hasn't been lowered, the bang comes from the front, it sounds like there is no shock absorber?. I will have a look underneath tomoz in the daylight but im pretty sure it isn't hitting the road. Its  sounds like its something to do with the wheels. Thats just my opinion as some1 not knowing much about cars.

new shock inserts and top mounts is a good place to start bud.

open the bonnet and look at the top mounts. if the plates are more than a few mm from the rubber then you mounts is dead. this can make it knock in holes.
other than that you've snapped a spring,or one of the wheel bearing is gone but you'd hear that on the corners.

Clipper - we had something like this, sounded like the brake caliper was loose…drove us mad for ages….brakes and suspension taken apart to no avail…..
…it was the front bumper of the Clipper kit, the plastic outer section was slightly loose on it's metal frame. Not been sorted properly (too lazy to drill out the few pop rivets where it joins the wheel arch lining), but packed it out with wooden wedges and no more noise…..

..then had a similar noise from the GTI, but nowhere near as loud - turned out to be the alarm siren module slightly loose and tapping against the inner wing  :banghead:  :banghead:

..might also be worth checking your wheel bolts are tight…..????

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

i'd look at the top mounts first. also check latteral movement in the top of the strut. shouldn't be any.

check top mount bolts are tight i think 22 mm spanner 10 mm allen key i had loud noise at small holes changed anti roll bushes  was going to change shocks and it was just the top mount bolt that was loose

21mm spanner and 6mm or 7mm allen key, depending on shocks. 22m ring spanner will suffice though.

I finally found out what the problem was just incase anyone else has the same thing. My right front shock absorber has gone and my left front shock is bent. No wonder the bang was so loud. So im putting in new shocks and struts. :P

I snapped my rear springs and my front shock went at the same time, I had the same bang, replaced the whole suspension, put coilovers on for about ?300

An idea :)?

i replaced my top mounts but with aftermarket mounts should there be a gap between the rubber and metal ?  Still got bang when going over pot holes!
