Gearbox output flanges

Can anyone who has tried it / done it possibly confirm whether or not I can swap the 100mm flanges off a knackered 1987 1800Gti Cabriolet 5-speed box onto a spare gearbox I have which is the earlier 90mm one? There doesnt seem much clearance on the inboard short side and I thought the bigger flanges might foul the gearbox casing? Are the actual output shafts the same and the circlip/oilseal details identical? :dontknow:

I have done this on my 83 gti box so that i can run the later larger driveshafts , as far as i know you should be able to do the same . You'll need to remove the dust caps in the centre of the drive flange and then remove the circlip thats hiding inside ,a word of caution though they are sprung loaded and will fly off if you dont use two large g clamps first to clamp the drive cups (clamp both the drive cup together if you get what i mean ), it will be almost imposible to reassemble without some form of clamp anyway as the springs are  quite strong . Dident have any problems with the splines or circlips , i did use new circlips though as i deformed the old ones removing them ( got them from Vag) . Hope that help
