gear linkage
just had my gear linkage bushes etc replaced whick has improved the gear change ish, but my mechanic told me the main gearlink rod is slightly bent. i'm told even this slight deviation is enough to make 1st very fiddly and overall it doesnt feel particularly smooth. apparently there is no after-market replacement for this so i'm left trying to source a second hand one or as a friend has told me it can be replaced with a weighted rod from a mk3 gti. are the mk1 and mk3 rods fully compatible?
any thoughts would be gratefully received
cheers.

Settling In
Just put a refurb kit in my GTI, still was not happy (althought refurb kit helped). I found there was too much play in the up and down stroke of the gearshit. I replaced the relay lever (approx ?16-18 from VW). This has reduced the amount of play, and made the shift shorter (to original I pressume). The relay lever (good picture in hanyes) is kind of ball bearing shaped with a flat plate welded on it. The ball bearing end is covered in rubber, this after 22 years had been worn down and you could clearly see the difference between old and new. Also check all the mounting bolts are tight.
What you need is for some one to sit in the car and wiggle the gearstick and for you to have a look underneath to find out where the play is coming from.
Good Luck
Scotty
