Front end rumble

Front end rumble

I have recently bought a 1989 GTI Cabby, which does have a couple of issues.

Between 45-53mph, there is a rumble from the front end, only when I'm on the throttle. I guess this means it isn't the wheel bearings, but it has been suggested it could be the drive shaft bearings. Any thoughts on what this could be before I start chucking money at the problem would be greatly appreciated  :)

My brakes also judder, which I'm not sure is associated with the above problem of not. It has drilled and grooved Brembo discs and pads on at present. Maybe the discs are warped, or it could be a sympton of the above problem?

I really want to get these issues sorted before I have to do the Christmas driving back up North, as it is pretty hairy braking over 50mph!

Cheers
Steve  :D

Sounds like a drive shaft issue really. Might need re-packing with grease, do you get a knocking whilst going round corners?

With respect to the brakes I'd just take everything off and clean the the surface of the hub with a wire brush and make sure the discs are seating correctly, and have a look if your pads are wearing evenly then fit it all back together with everything nicely greased that needs to be and hope for the best.

Other than that then your discs might have got a bit hot and some of the pad may have built up on the surface.

Check your wheel nut torque settings too.

Cheers fella  :D

I'll get this sorted over the next couple of weeks hopefully, and will let you know how it was resolved.

All sorted now  :D

Discs and pads replaced, along with new wheel bearings, inner and outer CV joints, and one new drive shaft. No rumble anymore, and no brake judder either.

The previous discs and pads had been installed incorrectly, leading to them being warped.

One of the CV joints had also become permanently fixed to the drive shaft too, so that all had to be replaced.
