crunching second gear.

i wonder if any 1 can help. my gearbox is a nightmare to get into second gear. all the others are fine, when i try and put her into second and leave the clutch out slowly i can feel her jump into gear, but sometimes with the gear stick pulled rite back it crunches then jumps in. this is hard to explain, but i think the teeth on the gear mite have gone and thats why sometimes its ok? is this a nightmare to change if it is gone, or am i better off looking for another box.the gear linkage is also gone as its sloppy in gear.

taffy

Hi the second gear on these boxes is weak and the conditions you encounter are normal when its worn . Replacement or rebuild is the only way to cure permanantly . Be carefull where you buy your box as some may have been removed for this reason years ago and then turn up on Ebay at a bargain price . 8O

Temp measure would be to change the gear box oil for good synthetic stuff and chuck one of those additives in for worn gears -Halfords and the like sell all sorts- this may give a temp cure  :dontknow: Till you replace the box .

Cheers……

i have a gentle crunching when going into second when the car is cold.

as soon as it warms up there is no crunching - guess it is on the way out though.  Is there another fix if not too far gone?

Or if it is the case of a recondition/replacement - how much would that cost

Ollie - check the gearbox oil

My gearbox was exactly the same as yours, and eventually it went, and I hadn't even looked at the gearbox oil level in 10 years - very very naughty boy I know.

For info, I found a late cabby gearbox with low miles, and as long as you use the cabby driveshafts there's no other differences.

good luck all
