i have 14 n steels with 185/60 tyres on and the handbook only qutes 13 in wheels with 175/70 it was pbviousley pre campaign

ihave them the same as the mk2 and I thinkits too high sterring is very light and the cars very twitchy i think its too hard

thanks thats what the mk2 has ( but 26 at the rear if I recall)

I wondered if they should be softer given the car is much lighter

are those figs from the handbook?

Just checked the manual:

Half load 24 all round
Full Load 26 Front, 31 rear

In reality though who changes the tyre pressure depending on the load, might offend some passengers

Cheers,

As Jon says the manual recommends 24lbs all round and that includes the convertible. I had a look at a data sheet on my last visit to a tyre dealer and that only covered the convertible from '83 - '91, it recommended 29lbs front and 26lbs rear so thats what I use on my '82 GTI (hardtop) with 14" wheels. It makes the steering a lot lighter than with 24lbs all round and it handles OK.

I messed around with tyre pressures over a period and ended up sticking at 28.5 psi (how anal!!) Can't recall the logic behind it but seemed to ride ok!

Hi thanks guys

tried them at 26 psi all round and was a lot better could actually feel what was going on and had some grip

may try 24 to see how that feels

at higher pressures 28/29 it was like driving on ice and felt overinflated

hotstart seems to have returned so havent had it out since grrr   but thats another story

Had a look at the tyre pressure sticker on the door shut again! States 26 psi all round for half load and from memory 28 front/33 rear for full load. Done 26 all round and feels much better than my anal 28.5!!
