Clunky steering

Hi Guys, long time no post
My MK1 rally car is about to go for it's rego inspection (kinda our equivalent of MOT) I am mostly confident (considering the complete strip and rebuild) but I don't really like the clunky noises the steering makes from around the end of the steering column and the uni-joints. There is very little if any "play" in the steering, just some funky noises

Is this normal ?

And a quick pickie  :P

Hi,

May not be the same thing, but my steering was making clunky noises, again very little play in the rack so I thought i'd chance it, have polybushed the front end, with new ball joints and shocks which appear to have transformed the car, no more clunking, very compliant ride and handling.

I would guess worn bushes but sounds like you might have replaced, loose nuts/bolts or strut mounts? or is the rack worn?

Ah! That looks like it might be the key. I have new stuff from the rack onwards  (mine is the old style that mounts hard to the chassis) but I re-used the steering column bushes and bearings. Any suggestions where I can find new ones???

Charles.
