9A Gearbox

Trying to sort out the gearbox on my 1.8 16v motor which i think needs  a good service!!.

It has the code 020 which means its rod change??

It also has the code Germany wwo 9A stamped on the end of the box and 9A 2544 stamped on a plate on the bottom of the bell housing.  Therefore i assume it is a 9A gearbox!!??

I have learn't today that i should have a 2Y box with this engine??  Why would the previous owner have used a mk 3 gear box on a mk2 engine in a mk 1 golf?? Its definately a 1.8 as it is stamped on the back of the block in big numbers!!!!

Did the gear box in the 2000 16V mk 3's have a LSD in them???

Thanx
Aidy

9A is a Mk1 Campaign box.

2544 I think is 25th April 1984 (25/4/4), which would tie in with the run out Campaing production dates right?

This is a low ratio box so your car probably goes like stink off the mark but tops out a bit early.
You might be bettre off getting a Mk2 16v box (not sure of the codes sorry) as this will give the car longer legs and will fit straight in!

Hi
Thanx for your help,  so the 9a box is a mk 1 gearbox, i was told yesterday that the 9a was used on the 2000 16V mk 3's as it is stonger than a 2y box used normally on a 1.8 16v engine!!! and some Audi 80's i think he said..
I want to change the clutch and the gear linkages but am unsure whether i buy a clutch and link kit for a mk 1 car/box or a mk 3car/box and then which ones will fit etc etc etc

9A is deffinately a Mk1 box (Got one in mine  ), so if you order bits for an '83 1.8 Mk1 Gti, you should be fine…

Thanx for your help

Are the ratios in the 8V  9A box not the same as the ones in the 16V 2Y box!!!  therefore the acceleration would be the same with both boxs.. :dontknow:

As mentioned, the 9A is both a gearbox (Mk1 Campaign) and an Engine (Mk3 Golf & some Passats), but note that Audi 80 engines and gearboxes are fitted north-south, not east-west (transverse), like VWs, so the gearboxes are VERY different - see below - note the inner CV joint faces on the *sides* of the box (this one is fitted to a racing car, and the driveshafts are not fitted yet)

The gearbox in that picture looks different to mine is that the Passat/Audi gear box or is that what my 9A mk 1 box should look like??

Does anyone know what car the 4K gear box came off?? and will it bolt onto a 1.8 16V and use the exisiting driveshafts etc etc?? it has the same amount of gears and ratios as a 9A box but a  shorter final drive of 3.89 instead of 3.67??? which is what i am after

Thanx
