Ok i found this info on Club GTi

mk2 GTI 16v part number of 357 612 107A
mk2 GTI 8v part number of 192 612 105E.

and the reply was by Rubjony

no difference in those servos, just the 357 part number replaces the 192 part number. all 1.8 mk2s had the same 9" servo, 1.3-1.6 have smaller 7". also diesel and autos got the 9"

so ya, fit the 22mc to your old gti servo and jobs a goodun

all i need to know now is how do i know what a 22mm MC looks like?
and can i use one from a mk3 GTi?

A 22mm master cylinder will have "22" cast into the body somewhere.

IIRC, a mk3 cylinder can only be used with a mk3 servo because of the rod lengths. Happy to be proved wrong!

the mk3 servo has a ball pin fitting, you can cut this off and run a tap down the pin to convert it to mk2/3 fitment though

How much of a difference does a 9" servo make I understand the big difference is the 22 mm M/C

it can only help, you cant fit a 22mm to a mk1 servo anyway so just fit as a pair.  the mk1 servo is 8" so mk2 one isnt a massive upgrade, its just you have to use it ;)

Sorry to hijack this post, however as the main question seems to have been answered already and it makes sense as we're already started. Just bought my mk1 and the guy removed the servo and just connected straight to m/c. Obviously the brakes are now shocking but it was a show car. I have just got a standard mk1 servo and brake bar intending to put it standard and also putting a 270 TSR disc upgrade using standard callipers. Before I fit this I just wondered if there were any options as to a different set up and the benefits.

Has anyone done this conversion using the mk3 unit? I have one in the garage from a TDi and was away to start this last light, it has the ball type arrangement but sadly it only has two bolts to attach it to the cross bar thing... worry thats going to cause some flex issues or am I just being paranoid?

its been done on a mk2 that i know of, just cut the ball off to the right length to match the old mk2 stud and cut a thread down it. 2 fixings should be fine but if you drilled 2 more and threaded in 2 studs with suitable threadlock compound that should sort you out.

id just try it first though, see if there is any noticeable flex compared to the mk1 unit. after all if its ok on a mk3 i dont see why it wont be on a mk1!

True, ruddy studs are smaller too. Guess it'll be a trial fit and see…

MK3 master cylinder on mk2 9" servo? does it work? anyone?

i have used the mk3 16v servo and mc on my caddy

the mc is 23mm but only has 2 m12 ports. also it is made of alloy

it will fit on the mk2 9" servo and is exactly the same size as the 22mm mc and uses the same reservoir

i didnt have any problems with the servo only having 2 bolts. i dont think it will have any more force on it than when in the mk3

as said before the rod on the servo needs cutting and threading but the thread needs to be m10 and the rod is about 12mm thick so it needs to be ground to a shoulder

i am now using a 25mm mc from a van on the 9" servo as this has the same size m10 ports as the mk1/2 golfs and has 4 ports

just be careful with mk3 stuff, some ABS models have the studs for the master cylinder offset from each other rather than horizontal, these obv are not going to fit a mk2 servo as the reservoir would be at a 45 degree angle

I'm in the middle of fitting a new 22mm MC to my Mk1 Gti LHD.

I didn't know I needed a bigger servo, the current servo looks fairly snug in there but I reckon if I grind away some of the servo bracket where it meets the chassis leg I could fit a 9 inch one.

I'm breaking a 1.9D Vento non abs at the moment, does anyone know if these had a 9 inch servo, I'm not near it at the minute so I can't measure it.

mk3 servo is 9" but its not correct fitment for mk1/2. however if you cut the ball off the end and tap it you can then fit a mk1/2 clevis pin. bit tricky but simple enough!
