Help with MK1 flywheel marking

Hi, newbie here.  I had the diesel pump rebuilt on 84 MK1 1.6D, it was leaking.  In doing TDC I noticed my car's flywheel has both a 0 and a notch about 1/4 inch apart, small enough that cyl. 1 cams stay upward in both senarios.  I went with the notch, did pump timing, priming, etc.  Now hard start and dies right away, I know could be alot of things.  My question is, should I use the notch or the 0 in setting the engine timing? hate to redo the whole thing at the same time I don't want to waste more time if cam timing is off.  I did the Youtube DIYs, they all have either a 0 or a notch not both.  All help will be greatly appreciated.

Gas engines have 0 and notch on flywheel.  Diesel engine just the notch.
My 1.6D engine/trans has a gas engine flywheel.
Safe to say the 0 is the TDC when used in diesel? Anyone been in this situation?
