richyhill - 1.8T Cabby

My new cabby

Hi Guys

For those of you on the forum that do not know me, I am richyhill, Regional Host for the Southwest , and got my first MK1 back in 2009.

2009-2012 - I had this clipper
-
https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&type=misc&id=your-mk1-golfs_2%2Frichyhill-my-k-plate I then fell in love with the Sportline model so sold the clipper and finally tracked a Sportline down and had it 2012-2015 -
https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=projects%2Fyour-mk1-golfs_2%2Fmy-j-plate-sportline

Then as a lot of cabby owners feel I think, I got that itch to try and tin top. Not enough room or funds to have both, so made the brave decision to sell the Sportline and buy this gorgeous tin top -
https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&type=misc&id=projects%2Fyour-mk1-golfs_2%2Frichyhill-my-new-gti Tin top ownership was not for me though , I missed the roof down feeling of the cabby in the summer, and the blue tintop was so far show car I was just worried I was going to scratch it etc

So the tin top was sold and the hunt started for a cabby again. My original plan was to buy a early small bumper cabby, respray in lagos yellow, get a 1.8T or PD engine put in, retrim the interior, drop it on air and do a really nice retro small bumper cabby, but with the funds I had from sale of tin top, after getting some pricing it was obvious i would not be able to do all of this with the budget.

So i found the below :-), 1.8T already done, had 1000 shake down miles on it since it had been built and i could see with some tweaks it could be near enough what i wanted to do. The week i was due to see if i was offered my Sportline back, so it was a very hard decision to say no, but i went to look at the 1.8T and fell in love with how it drives :-)

So what's the master plan ? ….

1) Original early single lamp chrome grill - (Got a new NOS one waiting for me to collect from Funk Star, aka classic vw)
2) Postie rear lights (Got these from Faisal, just need to be fitted)
3) Remove clipper kit and fit chrome bumpers
4) Chrome fuel cap, flag mirrors and any other trims needed once chrome bumpers are on
5) Re fit some speakers in rear door cards and get rid of 6x9's in parcel shelf
6) Fit some large late cabby speaker pod/pockets i have, to front door cards
7) Get some new standard badges for tailgate and fit
8) Fit CL or GTI lip on front once chrome small bumper on, and get magnetic front number plate for bottom of valance so can show plate-less on front

Then longer terms plans are

9) Change box (as still running 020), to 02J / 02M / better box and go hydraulic clutch or cable conversion thing of Toldeo
10) Work out if i can get some fifteen 52 snowflakes with ET30 to fit without needing and arch trims (really want these wheels on it)
11) Fit a simple and not to expensive air ride system

I then had a right result today, a local chap flagged me down when i was out in the cabby and said he was clearing out a friends garage and had a Mk1 Golf roof rack he needed to sell, he then said it was for a cabriolet!

I thought no way it cant be, but yep you guess it, needs some work in terms of painting and a few new screws to replace some rusty old ones but managed to get a Votex cabby roof rack  :o  :)  :)

I've just got one word to describe this car "MAGNIFICENT".

Alps - thanks mate, looking forward  to getting it where I want it :-)

borednow - If you want the grill I will put it to one side and bring it to Volksfest mate. Yeah goes well but I don't want to drive it to hard till I change box in case it eats the standard 020 and I have now car this summer

chrisL - yep the 150 AGU engine. Its pretty well put together to be fair, just a real shame he didn't do the box conversion at same time  :'( . It works with the 020, but getting reverse is like Jedi mind force, because I have had to make customer bars for the linkages so they don't hit bottom of turbo, its not ideal, and  you look a right plumb with a nice shinny car but you cant find reverse for toffee when trying to pull up at a show or park

golf Cabrio - Thanks Mate :-). When I got offered my Sportline back the week I was due to buy this it was a really hard decision! as still miss the Sportline, but always fancied a 1.8T or PD cabby and as this was already done, new paint etc, and as I got for a good price I would have been mad to turn it down

The credits not really to me though lol, bought not built ha ha , will give it my twist though :-)

What's the box conversion please? I'm looking at an AGU engine for mine that's all. Is yours a hydraulic clutch?

Post

chrisL - no mine is still on cable clutch and standard Mk1 Golf 5 speed GTI box (020 code I think). The standard 020 box should be fine with standard 150 bhp, but I don't want to put any more through it.

I have done a bit of reading and think there are two main options

Boxes such as an 02J or 02A I believe are better I think one of these codes might refer to a diesel box from a A3 or MK4 Golf, these then ideally need the hydraulic clutch but you can still run cable clutch and put a converter on the side of the box, so the cables act like a hydraulic clutch / come in from the point the hydo would.

I would like to do the 02M box which I think it 6 speed but I think that is much more work .

If you have a a search about the forum for 1.8T / 1.8 turbo conversion there are some really good historic threads on here from when people started doing the conversions

Shughy thanks mate, hope you and the family are all well.

It was a real hard decision as was so close to buying my Sportline back ! just always fancied a cabby with a modern engine

I might be contacting you soon for a customer cream leather tonneau to match interior off that guy you know, or have you got any black ones for sale ?

Cheers, Rich

Will also need wind deflector at some point  ;)

Hi rich

Yes all the family are well. Thanks for asking.

I can get custom made tonneau covers in most colours. However my source is very busy at the moment. In fact he would prefer to have your car here for fitting etc. He now has a three month waiting list on work orders.

I have a few original oem vw tonneau hoods covers in black but have the slot cut out for the rear head rest/seatbelt. My trimmers is looking at patching in a piece but I won't have them back for 2/3 weeks. Should be minty when complete. Some pictures on my site.

Summer stock of wind deflectors have arrived.

If I can help drop me an email or text. Again cab looks minty. Let's hope the sun comes out this year!

Cheers Hugh.

There's something about this one because it does look sharp from all angles!

I think it's the colour.

I don't like big bumpers, I don't like convertibles (especially with the hood down) and I don't like all the plastic 'friperies' vw added to the last models. (Sorry everyone! I do own one though!  O_o     )

But this one looks great, for some unknown, unfathomable reason. If it could sing a bit, it'd be on the X-factor with a really sad back story and would win     O_o
