Project CLEMY: tin-top restoration. 16v turbo

Post

This is the build thread for my MK1 Gti which will is being restored by JRM racing in Littlehampton.

After finally sourcing a solid rolling shell on an 83 plate I have shipped it off to JMR racing in Littlehampton.
She was dry stored for about 15 years and is going to be restored and used at weekends.

Plans are Already underway for sourcing a 9A block and 16v head, uprated gearbox and a couple of other essential bits…

I'll upload pictures as the build progresses and people's input and advice on the best place to soirce certain parts is much appreciated!

Calling anyone who's got any insight or knowledge around what the best cable shift change solution is for an 02a box going into a Mk1!

I need to source something more man for the job, and someone mentioned an Ibiza cable change tower would be suitable for an 02a box?…
Ideally not having to butcher the cables would be good so any post-work maintenance in years to come is quite simple…

Any advice is really helpful!

I run Mk4 golf shifters and tower in mine. Works really well, much better than the earlier o2a junk. Also, much easier to find in good condition.

Thanks so much for the info!…

Did you have to do much welding and cutting to get the tower in?

How did the cable shifters work out? What kind of cutting about did you have to do?… I've heard getting the cable lengths right to go onto an O2A box in a MK1 is tricky.

Thanks in advance!

Something which I read and was going to look into on mine, was to use the 02J shifter with Lupo GTI cables, as the lengths would be very close the required lengths apparently.
The only thing being that you would need the 02J shift tower from a O2J gearbox and shifter that goes in the car as well.

I got an 02a box and tower (from an ibiza I think) for a few hundred and it should be all good to go.

CLEMY is now in the garage having had the welding done and is getting ready to be primed and now I have a question about the rolling of the arches…

Don't roll your eyes, I'm not going mad with the size of wheels due to having her on coil-overs and not wanting to feel like I'm driving over the alps. Comfort and control is priority.

Not much selection for 14" so most likely 15" alloys.
6.0j or at a push 6.5j.
Offset dependent on what is best for the ride and arches, plus what I like of course.

…Pretty sure that covers it. I'd love to know your thought and input here, as not sure if I need to get the coach works to roll the arches!

PS. Anybody know how the new pattern parts from VW Heritage fix on? seems to be 7 screws which seems excessive! I thought wheel arch trims were bonded or glued on?

Don't know about heritage trims in particular, but original wheel arch trims are held on with screws, which probably helps to send the arch,s rusty.  6 or 6  1/2 inch rims shouldn't cause too much trouble.

Thanks pazwaa ,

Should be good for a comfy 220 bhp, running on emerald map.
Decided to stick with 8v head to keep it breathing nicely too.

John at JMR has just completed the build on my 1.8 8V G60 Turbo engine!
A nice touch to keep it looking modest but smart is the powder coated cam cover in satin black, plus a cheeky little Piper vernier pulley to set it off!

Project CLEMY: tin-top restoration. 16v turbo

Good work and a great car to start with ,if I where you I’d do a hydro clutch conversion for a start, also if your using a sprinter intercooler you can only have  the single headlight set up also get the bigger servo in while engines out . Much more room , also polynush York’s steering rack. Then heat wrap around your steering rack gaitor where it comes thru the firewall. It will melt otherwise , what turbo and manifold are you using?

Thanks gafo ,

I've heard a VR6 clutch with release bearing is a good route to go?

I am definitely keeping the 4 headlights so something slimmer to sit on top of a Hella G60 radiator would be the way forwards I think…Any brands or products you know of that would allow the 4 headlights to stay?

Haven't thought about the servo yet so that's a valid point!

With regards the shifter tower I replaced my 02a tower with a tower from a 99 golf gti and mounted the cables after I wrapped them under the car and they work ok , the cables are from the 99 golf gti also

Does anyone have a G60 intake manifold they'd sell?
Needs to have the code 037133 201N.
Please let me know if so!
