My first VW Project. MK1 Caddy

Thought i might as well start a a bit of a project diary.

This is how she stands at the mo

She needs a bit of work but don't we all.

Main work at the mo that i can see is front half of the rear arch on the drivers side, most of the rear arch on the passenger side. A bit along the rear bulkhead. And maybe a bit on the rear screen lip, not to sure till I get the rear window out.

oh also at the mo i can see a 5p size hole in the floor, till i remove the stone chip then it will tell me more.

Speak soon

Ok time for a update on my wee project.

First job I have gone for was to remove the bed as there was quite a few holes and rust and bends, you get the idea.

Then i sorted the drivers rear arch, tried to to my best as to be honest this is the first thing I have ever welded.

Sorry no before pics on this one

The it was onto the other rear arch. As its the way the rust was a hell of a lot worse once i removed all the paint/filler so I had to cut off a lot more this time.

Then onto welding in the new arch.

To anyone that reads this and wonders what panel i used to do the rear arches. I used MK1 3dr arch repair panels. They fit fine (in my eyes anyway lol) until the lower body line at the rear of the arch.

This is what my welds are looking like

This look ok with you lot? I know i should have cleaned the paint back a bit more.

Cheers for reading

Ok I have let this slip a bit.

Time for some more pictures and useless words.

Got the new bed fitted after cleaning up the rails. I think I was lucky I only needed to repair about 2.5" on two cross members.

Then gave it a lick of primer and giving it a good rubbing

Then start the pain of body work. Dam I hate this part

Then it was onto working on the tail gate. The one I got with was is in a very bad state so I sorted another one which also was a bit bent but no where as bad as the first one.
But was still quite bent in the middle so handel did not move to open gate. So sod it smoothed the handle

Then I started thinking. Always a bad Idea lol. I was not happy with the rear under the tailgate. So looking round work I found a old metro rear bumper so what the hell lets cut it up and see what it turns out like.

Then working forward time to strip the inside and see what the floor looks like. Was not too bad. Two off those beg round things where rusted out so they where replaced with some new fresh steel. Plus there was about 5 other rust patches. The biggest was about the sixe of a 50p so again not too bad

Then around to under the bonnet. Was rotten around the clutch cable area so that was cut out and replaced. And who ever owned it before me had removed MOST of the bulkhead and ripped into the steel so had to fix that. But I have sourced a good used panel so I am going to put it back. Not too scene but what the hell. Now I am just going over to make sure it is sound.

As for the engine I will be going AAZ

Ok time for the next update.

I feel I have gone as far as my skill or lack off can go with the bodywork. So it has been moved over to the body shop for them to finish off and paint it.

As for color I still am unsure of what color to go for.

Outstanding Keith and the best thing is you know when to quit!
As for the colour, well it's a personal thing but I'd say WHITE, although that's be because I think white looks the best. (many members know that by now)
And I'm sure I'm in the minority there!
