Hello

I am luke 23 from Huddersfield west Yorkshire  Service engineer by trade
This is my 3 door 1982 Mk1 Golf restore

I will not be doing this on my own I have a decent group of mates who are willing to help
James , Hamz , Adam & Greig

I bought the shell off Hamz for a good price as he needed room for his other 2 mk1's haha

James has had a mk1 that was displayed in PVW issue :

Now he owns a sweet BMW E28 1983 in red

Adam has a MK3 Rocco R ……little more fun to drive than my Golf R

Greig has a MK3 Golf & a Mk5 Golf that he shows

So I hope to be able to fit a 1.8T agu Engine to the mk1 I know the project will be a lot of work but it should be worth it in the end

So Here is how The car was when I picked it up It came with no seats
The dash and clocks was included but had been stripped off
Also I found spare brake callipers and suspension in the spare wheel well after lifting  the carpet up

I didn't like the body kit so that was the first thing that got ripped off it was sealed on with filler and expand foam

Then we started to chip away the filler that remained on the car

There are 2 holes in the drivers side floor that need welding and a spot on the passenger side that we noticed when the wings came off the shell is now going to be gone over with a wire wheel on a grinder to get rid of all the bits of rust …etc  then we can see what else needs welding

Glad you took off the body kit, it did not look right and it reminded me of the 90's when body kits did seem to find there way on to Mk1 tin tops.
Lots done so far and keep us updated.

I guess there was a small block engine in there before from the position of the engine mount.
I think you will need to move it to fit a 20v turbo in there unless you are changing over the way the engine sits in the car?
Position of big block (1.8) engine mount.

Well nothing at the moment………. but it will be the standard 1.8 GTi DX engine going back in so I can't be much help with advice on fitting a 20vT but lots of advice/guidance on this site.

so I have had to move the Golf from my work into my garage at home 1st day I started working on it at home I had a complaint with in 15 mins  so I need to find a new unit after xmas

I ignored the complaint and cracked on with removing the Fire guard  I had already used A spot weld drill bit to drill out the spot welds

then started to chisel away to remove the guard and had to knock some spot welds out completely by using the chisel because I could not reach with the drill right in the corners
I had to cut part of the bracket for the wiper motor to get the fire guard off also which will be relocated later on

In the end it all came off with some brute force  I managed to make a hole in the corner of the bulk head which will need to be welded up soon as possible

This is all new to me and I dont get a lot of spare time to work on the car so it will be a slow process
but I am enjoying it so far

I have been looking into acid dipping the mk1 To remove all the paint and filler ect … but unsure as it says any opjects such as alliminuim will be destroyed  but is there any on the mk1 ?

now i shall start looking for a good paint code and after xmas decide what engine to put in the car
