Finally, the car I really wanted

Post

About 13 years ago I bought a Mk1 black GLS cabby auto. It had a seized 1600 engine which I replaced with an 1800 from Crazy Quiffs, as I live about three miles away.

It was never quite the car I wanted, mostly because it was an auto, but also because the paintwork really wasn't that great, though overall it was a pretty decent looking car. I could never quite bring myself to throw the money it needed at it, which would have made it very nice, but still an auto …

A friend I met through VZi (I had a T2 bay too) has had a series of Golfs, including a GLi cabby very similar to mine (year older, manual obviously, also black). I thought she was keeping it for the long term but a job move and no space meant she put it up for sale last autumn. I was certain it would sell very quickly, kicked myself that I didn't have the $$ and forgot about it.

This summer I had to have a clear out of the barn I rented, and realised that the cabby would have to go. Put a fresh MoT on it and decided to Ebay it off with no reserve. Just as I put it up I saw that Gemma hadn't sold her cabby last autumn and was now just needing to get shot of it.

Saw what she was asking for it, realised I had to have it, grabbed a mate with a T6 and a trailer and went to fetch it. It's not perfect, but for the price I paid it's fabulous. Some tiny bits to sort out when I have time, but it's such fun to drive. It's KCR 540Y - seems to have had a fair few owners (15), a lot more than my old one (3), but I guess that's not too much of an issue. Does anyone recognise it?:
