5 years untouched finally starting!

Post

So cutting a long story short I have owned this car for 6 years, I cooked the engine on a motorway run so pulled out the 1.1 and replaced with a 1.3 then left it in a barn!

The idea is to get it roadworthy, I'm not interested in getting it painted or adding chrome I just want my mk1 back! The only parts I need is a mars red bonnet and a new radiator, as you can see it needs quite a bit of work

Does anyone know anywhere that will put this back on the road for me? Like I say I just want it roadworthy it's not rusty and doesn't need spraying, I live in kent but can trailer it, ideally a restoration garage, individual car guy or just a vw nut that wants to get paid to do his hobby!

Anyway here it is, Thanks

Poor old thing! Looks like it could do with some love

Still if it's solid and just needs putting back together shouldn't be too much of a problem for someone.

You've got all the bits?

Does the engine still turn over?
Did you leave it for 6 years with the rocker cover cap off and the carb open like in the the pictures?

You may need a little more than just a bonnet and radiator, don't forget to factor in, brake lines and rubber fexi hoses, wheel cylinders, front calipers, brake shoes, brake drums, wheel bearings, rubber fuel hoses, possible fuel tank etc……..

Are you looking for someone to take it how it is and bring back a complete running car with an MOT or are you willing to any work your self?

Things do rust away in barns and the Mk1 Golf is a bit of a rot box, check all the sills/floor rear mounts, end of wings, tops of wings, rear valance as they are usually the area which rust.

If the engine has been left open then factor in an engine strip down to look inside incase stuff and things have fell into the engine.

Buzzy

Hi, Where abouts in Kent are you?
You could try Carbon Motive

Neil at Carbon Motive should be able to do this for you and he's in Sittingbourne

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi yes it is in need of some love! When I put it in the barn the engine was fully covered up, I've checked wheel well, all arches, sills, rain gutter on the roof and all seems to be solid!

I will do as much as I can which is panels, refit the interior give it a good scrub but will mainly need a hand wiring it all up, refitting brake servo bits, and setting up gear linkage and carb

I would like to get it back ready to run, I know that I will need pershibles I.e seals, pads, tyres and fluids, the bonnet was left in my old yard and the rad was chucked as it had split!

It was a running car (even though I only drove it 25 miles) so everything is there I just need someone to tell me what they need and how much they want to get it mot ready

I will be calling them tomorrow thanks!

The engine would be a straight swap but the brakes from the mk4 probably won't be.

The rears can be used but it's a bit of a match and mix of parts. Unless you really want rear discs, stick to the drums on the back

So today was the first day of actual work, had to clean out the mice nest from the rear wheel well so thought I might as well give it a good scrub!

Also fitted the rear strut brace, refitted the seat belts, built the drivers door back up and fitted it!

Main things I noticed was I struggled to fit the main door seal, do these need to be glued on? Or should they just sit on the inner lip?

IMG_0484.JPG So progress is good! My mechanic mate is going to do the final wiring and get it mot ready, just waiting on few parts to get the body finished, big help from vwheritage ordering parts quick delivery and great quality

Really struggling to find the elusive mars red bonnet! Eventually going to be on coilovers and Stuttgart st4 15"

Let me know what you think and any tips would be great

So 5 years later and it's almost roadworthy! Only things I can complete are fitting the arches, waistline trim, boot and door seals then it's going to the mechanics to be wired and fired up!

After that I'm planning to get a local detailer out to give it a good mop and she will be gleaming!

I've already got ideas for a engine swap once I'm fed up with the 1300's power! (Or lack of) considering it's never been painted the arches are still solid, underside is solid, only found a small patch of rust where the arch meets the underside

Don't think that's to bad for a 34 year old car!  IMG_0512.JPG IMG_0528.JPG IMG_0529.JPG IMG_0532.JPG IMG_0533.JPG

Finally roadworthy! Still needs lowering some wheel spacers and a headlining but it's driveable, everything working as it should, and what a car to drive! Been getting a lot of thumbs up from people and ignorant neighbours coming out for a chat so I'm over the moon, now what's next hhhmmm…..  IMG_0668.JPG IMG_0669.JPG IMG_0673.JPG IMG_0674.JPG IMG_0684.JPG

Well done on saving this and getting it back on the road. Once you've fitted the your coilovers and maybe a 3 piece grill it will look spot on, good work

So did that black number plate get through on MOT?

I would like a 3 piece grill but it's a budget build and that one was a lot cheaper! No I had to cable tie my original plates on it, brakes only just passed but apart from that no other advisories
