1st Golf project

New member and first Golf project.

Stripped the interior out and lifted the carpets.

Disconnected the battery…which is just sat on the battery tray.

Pretty happy with the floor, couple of small surface areas to treat.

Rear towing point has rotted and the offside rear quater is a different shade, so will dig into the underside soon.

Will be taking the bonnet off to get into the engine bay next. Need a new radiator and the wiring is terrible, there has been a headlight conversion done I think at some point so it looks like I'll be chasing that for a while.

Really looking forward to getting into this.

Will post more as I go and will definitely be after advice!

First bit of advice I'm after is roof folding mechanism. The locking handles up front, only the passenger side has a release catch on the handle but both do work in unhooking from the A pillar.

The roof then comes up about 5 inches and then won't go any further.

The two release catches on either side of the rear seats, I have had them up and down but no joy moving the roof any further back. The drivers side has resistance in it, passengers side is pretty loose.

Am I missing a trick?

The roof outer is new, doesn't have the window cut in…I will get a pro to do that I think! I was supplied a new window frame when purchasing the car.

What year is the car as it might have an electric roof?
There will be hydraulics in the boot behind the side card.

What's going on with your clutch cable, has someone fitted a South Africa later golf clutch cable mechanism as your cable is routed behind the engine, what’s the strange bracket fitted to the gearbox end of the cable, that’s not standard?

Yes normal for just the passenger side roof handle to have the locking tab, stops the passenger opening the roof if they use the handle as a grab handle.

Yes that’s how the roofs come with no hole, once the window frame is in place you have to cut a hole in the roof and staple it to the frame then fit the window. The rear tension cable along the back of roof should also not been seen, might be lose. If you are getting someone to fit the rear window get them to look at the cable.

RHD Diesels had the clutch cable run round the rear of the engine for some reason, but not all way around the expansion bottle. Has the gear box end been extended to give more leverage and make the pedal lighter???

Thanks for the advice about the roof, I decided to leave it to a pro after reading its a bit of job clamping and attaching while fitting the window/frame. So I'll get it all looked over in a oner. The rear tension cable, should that be tight and sit under a lip at the rear and hidden by the roof material?

Ref that clutch cable, I haven't even started to look at the engine bay yet. Will get round to it later today, I love that questions get brought up just after seeing one picture of it :). I'll take some more pictures later and see what your guys think.

Car is 1989

The roof should definitely just drop back once the two catches are released, it might be that the rear stay brackets aren't fully connected and causing it to jam? They are surface mounted either side of the parcel shelf zone.

If you have got an electric roof and you need bits or if you want to go down that route, I've got what looks like a complete system with wiring and dash panel/buttons that came with mine.

I was going to have a proper look at the spares that came with mine over the weekend as I only got my car this week.

Hi bigbeech,

Thanks, I'll have a look at those.

Which side of the boot should the roof electrics be on, I'll take some pictures and see if there are indicators of them having been there previously.

1989 is when it may be electric roof, is there or was there a switch in the centre console?

The pump etc is behind the passenger side card, there should be a little screw tap near the bottom ( Luckily I don't have an electric roof so not 100% up on this)

Link here with some pics or post up a picture of the boot card.

Looked at the roof this evening, nothing like that link you sent Mark1. No rams in sight. Second to last picture is the latches I said about, drivers side has resistance and passengers side is loose. There is a pull lever under the boot, cable is connected but should that be releasing the roof?

Will post pictures of the what I looked at roof wise and then do another bit about the engine bay…

So other bits done this evening,

Took the radiator and fan off, tested the fan and it works. Radiator is getting replaced.

Hoovered a lot of rubbish out of the engine bay.

Started to look at the electrics…felt sick…stopped looking at the electrics. There are plugs and loose wires all over the place, odd bits cable tied everywhere. I think I'll service the engine and sort that first then come back to the electrics!

Drained the oil and took the oil filter off.

Took the air box off. There are no ends on the ducting, just the ribbed hose to the air box.

Looked at the carb and realised that the base of it has split. The thicker rubber base under the aluminium spacer, think its referred to as flange?!

Thinking about stripping the carb, cleaning and replacing gaskets. Just need to identify which it is. Marked up Weber but has two different numbers on it.
21548 01 179 on the little plate & 2341 on the top edge.

Any advice for stripping the carb?

I'll get parts ordered and make a start of the fuel, draining the tank and checking the lines.

I am enjoying the space in the engine bay 😂

That's good, it has had a Weber carb conversion.

From the factory only Pierburg carbs were fitted.

The Weber is a common conversion because the pierburgs are super complicated and a pain to set up…

Jazzydog, Well that is good news :lol:Is the flange standard across the two? Need to replace the one that is split.

Do you know how to confirm the Weber carb so I can look to strip and replace gaskets?

Yes Ollie, it’s the standard rubber mount and a conversion plate on top for the Weber. Just go by the numbers on the carb itself, I have heard others talk about a company called webcon??

Thanks Jazzydog,

Will add that standard one to my shopping list :thumbs:That's the problem there are two numbers on it, I'll look them up and see what they recommend.

You do have a Manual roof, the knob you can see when you open to boot is so you can drop the back of the back seat, it stops anyone getting in the boot when you leave the car with the roof down.
The 2 levers inside the car near the back seat are to release the roof once it's folded down as it's locked in place to stop it flapping away when driving with it down. Both knobs have nothing to do with releasing the roof to fold it down.

There's a guide on replacing the roof which should help with gaining access to see if anything is missing or jammed, I'll find the link and post it up for you.

The Webber carb looks like a standard replacement 32/34 DMTL,.

You should also be able to see some pictures to compare or drop them a email both companies are very helpful as I've asked them for advice before and used both companies.

Lots of places sell the rubber carb flange.

Guide to the roof, if you download it as there's lots of pages and pictures, you will need to move the headliner cover where the C pillars would be to see what's happening with the mechanism.

The parcel shelf will pop out if you drop the back seat and push it up from underneath, be careful of the plastic holders for the shelf as they are difficult to get hold of.

Great detail thanks.

Oh right, when I took the back seats out there was a pull tab on the passengers side of the rear seat, a rod runs across to lower the seat backs. Do  I have to have that knob pulled out and use that at the same time?!  I'll maybe ask someone to give me a hand and see what happens with it in and out and pull that tab at the same time.

Thanks for the links, I will take a look, compare and also contact the companies to make sure i'm getting the right bits.

Thanks :)

Yes you are meant to pull the knob out near the back of the car and it should stay out about 1cm then pull the tab next to the back seat to drop it, once the seats dropped down you should see the locking device attached to the cable as it might need some adjustment to work right but it's not really necessary as you've got lots of other jobs to do 1st

 Knob pushed in

Knob pulled out

Back seat dropped down.

As you can see it stops the black lever on the seat from lifting up.
