'83 Golf - (non)BBS Bodykit - Resto Project

(EDIT: The good stuff starts on page 8 lol )

Hi there, been a member on here for ages but sold my Golf 2 years ago to a friend of mine when I bought my own place. He's now selling it and I want it back (always regreted selling it).

However its not had the best 3 years and had a bit of an "off" this winter".

He also replaced the interior with a rollcage and buckett seats.

Heres the story Since I got it and what its like now.. Hopefully I can get a bit of advice from people regarding IF i shhould buy it back, for how much and then if i buy it ill keep my progress updated here.

Looks like its just front pannel and obviously bonnet, the front leg does looks to be ok..

Do I need a new front panel or can this be fixed? I'd ideally get a new front panel but thats a lot of work and the kit is smoothed into the car.

Need to get complete new interior and sell the buckets and rollcage!

OK looks like i got a price for how much he wants for it, Just eed a few opinions if possible.

Just realised how many pieces the interior makes up.

It's missing the the seats (obviously) door cards, rear quarter cards, parcel shelf, rear speaker/parcel shelf mounts, 3 covers for the boot (both sides and wiper motor cover on boot lid), all the carpets, gear gaiter, and handbrake cover!!

Pants!

Off to the bodyshop tomorrow to get some quotes on the damage!

Quick update: Bought the car! Gave me a reasonable price so couldn't really refuse! Plus i'm sure he'd kick my arse if i said no after 2 years of nagging the crap out of him to get it back!!

So far I have hammered out the front pannel as much as I could and bent the bonnet back into a 'sort of' bonnet shape, needed to make the bonnet shut properly as the alarm kept going off.

Currently waiting for Frankie from Frankies Paint Shop to pop round and have a look and let me know how much it'll cost me to fix it all up.

Got some seats to put back into it, not sure if i will keep these yet or get them retrimmed. May put them back up for sale as im looking for some mk3 leather or similar. Definately going to sell the spare drivers seat.

Also although the grill now sits as it should do, its still pretty smashed up, so I decided id treat myself to a grill too

Not a huge amount of progress but after re-insuring/taxing/MOT'ing my R6, and paying for my iPhone im redicuosly skint!!

Quick update! After a month of searching the internetz every night for bits for the golf, I decided to give crazy Quiffs a call

Managed to get nearly everything I needed from them In one go:

  • Carpet - good condition with complete heel plate - even had the side "dog ears" - £40
Gti arm rests - £15 pair
Inside door pull surrounds - £10 pair
Full Set of Gti Door cards - Only managed rears - £20[/list:u]

Needed a manifold too, which they had, but it had a broken stud in, no biggy, bit I was feeling too lazy to try and drill it out!

So for about a tenner in fuel and £85 I have almost everything I needed to return the interior from a stripped out racer to its near former glory!

Before I went down to Crazy Quiffs I ordered a handbrake cover from eBay for £5 (postage was £5 but when it turned up it had £1.17 sticker on it!!)

    Removed the bucket seats

    Then trial fitted the carpet!

It may look a bit tatty but once I gave it a good shampoo, it looks good as new!!

Thinking I may take it back out and put some sound proofing in underneath before fitting it properly. Is this worth it??

**Also been speaking to a panel beater RE: the front panel, who seems tho think that he will be able to put it back to rights without then needing much filer when it hits the bodyshop (which will hopefully be soon as i'm pished of with looking at the thing with a big dent in the front of it!!**

Decided that after a week of near solid terrential rain, I needed somewhere to put the golf!

Good news is that at my parents house there is a double garage 8)

Bad news is that with my dad working from home now, this is how the garage looked as of last week:

So after eventually convincing my mum (to my surprise) that putting the golf in the garage would be berneficial for both of us because I would clear out the garage free of charge   I set about the 3 or so day long task of doing just that!

1st thing was to get eeverything out, which almost immediately led to think that this garage was pretty much untidyable!

But eventually 2 weekends and and a few evenings Although still not completelly finished!!! I managed to find my beloved golf some shelter from the harsh british weather (and as a byproduct to keep the insurance company happy!! £380 fully comp Oh yeah!!   )

Found a roll of leftover industrial lino flooring to put down which means I can happily work on the floor and its easily cleanable too, result!

Even managed to find room for my bike :)

Looking for a set of these for when the car is back from the bodyshop!

Steffan RS's 14x8's with et 20

I have also started a Poll to see what people think about the BBS kit (ON or OFF) would be great to get some feedback!!

http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=89051&highlight=

Been to the paintshop this afternoon and had a chat about the kit. Because the kit is, in their words, "Well stuck on". We decided that to save a bit of money and as I can do it as and when I have spare time, I'm going to remove the kit myself.

I can take as much time or as little time doing it as I please. I'm pretty handy with a spanner and have done a fair amount of bodywork in my time so should be a breeze. Going to take my time though make sure I do it properly and then I can delivery it to the paintshop ready to work on straight away.

Going to start it tomorrow!!

Exhaust

Ok, before I started pulling off the kit I thought I would investigate where my exhaust was blowing from, was starting to become too loud to drive!

Was obviously coming from the exhaust manifold but wasn't sure if it was the manifold itself or just the gasket.

Heres what I found!

Not a problem though as I have a lifetime guarentee on the whole Magnext System (or so I thought). I grabbed the warenty card/number and rang Magnex. Turns out that the CLF

the company that were originally behind Magnex and Scorpion went bust a few years back and made all lifetime warentees void!!

So a quick trip down to my local exhaust specialists (PTR EXHAUSTS) and £20 later I ended up with this

Good times!

Can get back to removing the bodykit now!

Few bits + Leather!! 2nd Sept

Not much of an update really, but an update none the less.

  • My Toad alarm stopped working completely so I phoned a few dealers and they said they would have a look at it for about £40/£50 per hour, not bad, however I managed to fix it myself in the end  8)

Turns out that when messign with the new battery and accidently touching a few wires together on the electric window circuit that I blew a fuse and frazzled one of the main fuse wires to the alrm circuit!! I replaced the fuse and wire and and can now start the car! Woop!
  • Replaced the electric window switches with some of these

Look to be very good quality compared to the old ones!
  • Replaced the broken HT leads, boggo hotwires ones from Halfords temporarily, but on trade they are about £1.50 each which you canny grumble at really!
  • Fitted new expansion tank cap and fan temp sender switch.
  • Also put up my new interior for sale on ebay (also going on here too) as I bought some letaher seats instead.
  • New CV boots

A bit of a impulse buy and not sure how the colour will match up to my car    but for the price I paid they are well worth putting in until something better comes along. They were advertised on here for a day or so and I thought they would have been sold but suprisingly managed to get em.

So my old seats (set of MINT GTI seats with spare Drivers seat) are now up for grabs, pics at the begining of this thread!

    [/list:u]

Next update will be a much bigger one.. Fitting the new calipers I bought and removing the bodykit!!

Cheers, Started brakes last night, putting interior in toningt.

The general consensus is that I will send it to the bodyshop without the bodykit, gety it all painted AAAAND if at a later date if I want to put the bodykit back on, they will paint and fit the new kit for me.

As far as the steffans go, they aren't actually mine, just shopped them on to see how they will look. Been trying to find some for a while now but none's selling any second hand at the mo!

Cheers, will have to have a look, see whats about

Quick update too: Not been able to get started on removing the kit yet.. Going to take a few days off and get started on it next week.

interior is 90% finished now, fitted the seats and carpet properly, fitted new front and rear door cards (and door pull surrounds) and fitted the B piller grab handles.

Also a few pics of my new brake callipers (just need to fit the new pads now!).

Not 100% sure how long I will keep this interior for to be honest, but despite the colour difference, I works well for now.

UPDATE!! BODY KIT IS OFF.... Almost

UPDATE!! BODY KIT IS OFF…. Almost

Managed to get the arches and side skirts off the passenger side without braking any of it!!

Wasn't easy though! Here what I did:

  • Use a really sharp blade to score a line flush to the wing to remove the 1mm of filler, was supprised that there was so little filler between the arches and the body.
  • Got a standard chissel and mallet and placing the chissel flush with the wing I made a slightly bigger notch between the arch and the wings.
  • Once the filler was removed I got a wallpaper scraper and slid that betweent he arch and the wing. The stuff the kit was held on with was so strong that I had to use the mallet to tap the scraper down and break the seal between the kit and the body.
  • Eventually once the seal was mostly broken, it was a case of yang the kit as hard as possible without braking anything or warping any of the panel, which I must add woreked perfectly. But bloody hell do I ache now and my hands are shredded!!

Still got the other side to do but thought I would leave it on for a few day, so I can compare sides.. Kit on or Kit off (permenantly).

The good news is that the rear arch is OK with only a minute amount of serface rust… Result. Front wing obviously to be replaced anyway with a Genuine one, I think the fact that it was a copy probably didn't help the rusting, especially at the bottom of the wing where the water collects between the body.

Just got to clean up whatever it is they bonded the kit to the car with.. It's almost like they had melted a tyre down and then poured that down the inside of the kit!

Chears! I was unsure what to expect but the guys who did the work originally seem to have done a good job at keeping everything protected under the kit, it's just unfortunate that the front wing let it down otherwise I wouldn't be having to remove it. But the bottom if the front wings are always a magnet for trapped water.

Still got got the other side to do but there isn't any evidence that the arches will be any worse than this side.
