New member - Looking to get into Mk1s

Post

Hi All,

As the title suggests, I'm looking to get into Mk1's. I've come from owning a 8v Mk2 GTI and fancy a change (Which you can roughly see in my sig, happy to post more pics if anyone is interested!).

So I've no doubt I'll be looking around this forum for some advice/tips for getting my own mk1!

Any tidy GTI's for sale? Nothing too modded and nothing that's going to break the bank please :)

Welcome! Loads and loads of great people and info around these parts… I'll point you to the "Useful Websites Thread" from the Mk1 Golf Chat section of the forum (https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=mk1-golf-chat_2%2Fuseful-websites-thread). That should make for a decent primer.

As for Mk2 pictures, yes please!

Sadly, it was very rotten. But was all sorted in the end before going to a new owner. Was great fun! :)

Looks nice mate. Ideally I'm after a tin-top.

Haha, agree with that. I've seen some nice ones for around 5-6k.

I'd like something that doesn't need too much doing to it and it has to be solid!

Welcome to the club first of all.

Your buying requirements for example, GTI Tintop, solid that doesn't need much doing to it.
You already setting the bar fairly high and to pick up one like that as someone else said your starting at 5k if you're extremely lucky and up.

Not saying it's not possible but very unlikely.
You will find some but there're going to need some work like, well you name it engine rebuild, panels and door seals, paint job, replacement interior and at best you can expect to spend a couple of grand.

Don't want to spoil your dream but those are the facts and as much as we don't like them, we can't ignore them! 😉 👍🏼

Appreciate that mate, even Mk2 prices are now going through the roof. Wish I kept hold of mine a bit longer! I don't mind having to do bits and bobs, it's part of the "fun" of owning a classic car. But I don't want to be dealing with the dreaded tin-worm again :D
