Hi just like to say hello as I am a newbie not used to forums, I just bought a 1987 gti cabriolet I have been looking for some time, a lot I looked at were a long distance away and were not as described in adds usually very tatty and needing too much work, I finally bought a 3 owner car which last owner had for 26 years, all going well until I broke down today :( due to a fuel leak found out the swirl pot is leaking, I have tried everywhere but cannot find anywhere that has one in stock could anybody help? thanks in anticipation.

Well welcome to the club first of all. ☺️

As I'm not in the U.K I'm not going to be a great deal of help but fear not, I'm sure someone on here will either have a good spare or can point you in the right direction. 😉

So here's a bump to the top of the list! 👍🏼

Looking for one like this?
Showing out of stock but you now have the part number.. Maybe drop them an e-mail to find out when they are getting them back in stock?

Expensive for a plastic box but that is the price of them…

You may be able get them from Germany if in a hurry?

thanks for your help,  yes thats the one white plastic squarish box with 4 pipes I tried VW Heritage, Classic VW, Crazy Quiff's and Werk34 all say out of stock do not know when or if they are likely to be available, reading some posts on here it says it can be by passed but would cause fuel starvation when cornering could I do that and make sure I keep the tank half full until I can get hold of one? at the moment I have dropped the rear axle beam to make access easier not much room and hands too big, does anyone have a good second hand one for sale? my plan is to work through the car checking all the mechanics and replacing parts where necessary to make it more reliable,  I think the last owner only maintained it enough to get it through the mot cheaply as possible, I will put a picture on when I get back on the road.

Good idea to check and clean out the fuel tank and system as it causes allsorts of problems further down the line and it starts to get expensive.

Check the fuel filler neck and fuel filters are best replaced every couple of years or 20,000 miles.

Not sure about by passing the swirl pot??

What filler neck did you get, one for a cabriolet or one for a tin top?

proper cabriolet one bit expensive but no choice

That's good as I was going to say it's a hassle fitting a tin top filler neck as you really need to cut a section out and re weld the end back on to get the right angle going towards the fuel tank.

With the new filler neck it's worth painting it with plenty of stone chip paint and waxoyl it once in place as it has a lot of mud, stones etc thrown at it. I do clean mine before and after the winter as the mud does like to sit on top of it and that is what rusts it away.

Don't use hammerte paint on it as it's rubbish as it's to hard and chips off easily.

Unfortunately thats exactly what i've done painted it with Hammerite smooth black, I will give it a coat of Upol stone chip then spray gloss black on top, thanks for the tip I didn't realise Hammerite chipped so easily, managed to find a second hand swirl pot today :) I hope its in good useable condition as informed fingers crossed.

I painted my last filler neck with hammerite and it did last about 7 years with me cleaning and waxoyl it but I kept losing bits of paint off the filler neck over time and had to touch it up on the bits I could see, it did rust away on top as I could not see that area. I did read on here not to use hammerite.
I know the cabriolet filler necks are expensive to buy so that is why I recommended some good quality paint so they last a lot longer. I've painted my new filler neck fitted last year with epoxy mastic and then a couple of coats of stone chip paint then lots of waxoyl. My car is a daily and gets used all year round.

Get a new rubber hose which joins the filler neck to the tank and 2 new jubilee clips as the old ones usually rust and the rubber hose goes rock hard and is tricky to reuse.

If if you can see the pictures in my thread you can see my filler neck and what I’ve done to it?

Thanks, I have replaced the fuel tank and fuel tank neck, both front wishbones and bushes, steering track rod ends and rack gators, cv gaitors front and rear brake overhaul cylinders and pipes gradually working through to make it reliable and hopefully no more problems for a while. almost forgot removed front wings and welded in new metal at the bottom where the plastic arch screws go and welded a small patch to both rear sills at the back very minor again where the plastic arch screw go, I cannot make my mind up to leave paintwork original or have it repainted, the paintwork very flat in places and it has had the lower doors and bonnet re painted at some stage I was told the hinges were worn and the doors dropped and damaged the paint. I am pleased as I cannot find anymore rust or rot been all over and under the car all the panels are original not bad for 30 years old.
