Hi Gang .

Thanks for adding me to the group .
I've just purchased my first mk1 . How could I find out my cars year ? It's a Dutch import and I think it's early although not a Swallowtail .

I've not done the Nova / Dvla thing yet so is there a way you guys could identify it from the vin number for example?

Other info I have is

Left hooker
Chrome small bumper
Chrome waist line trim
Single headlights
Mandarin orange ,looks original
Dog tooth type material / tweed colour seats ( no headrests )
White vinyl headliner
Black plastic single drivers side door mirror
Black plastic petrol cap
1.1 cc
Small ( early dash ) single kph clock ( no rev counter )

I'm hoping its a late 76 ( tax exempt ) or 79 ( my year of birth ) . Any years in between also cool but the thought of an 80s car brings thoughts of Duran Duran to mind 😂😂😂👎🏽.

Look forward to any input you lifers can offer .

What ever it turns out to be , I love it already .

Welcome Brent brento45

That's a lovely, early MK1

I can't help with the year, but one of the clever than me types around here like Rajan dubboy may be able to tell you roughly or accurately by certain trim features?

In the meantime, you can apply to VW for a birth certificate for the car - it takes some time to come back, but will tell you all you need to know ;)

Enjoy your time here - have a think about membership too - for £20 you should soon get that back on parts and insurance discounts

Have you much work to do on it?

Cheers
Andy

Cheers Andy .

Yes I'll pay subs no worries . Where do I do it ?
Basically I cut my Dub teeth on my custom t4 camper/day van over 6 years ago and at the time their forum was invaluable source of info .

Literally, in the last 10 mins I've been googling vin numbers and how they relate . Just looked mine up on the strut top and it is 178317xxxxVW

So it's either 77 or 78 but looking on your series one data table , would someone tell me if "vin code " 7 or 8 relates to the second or third letter as mine is 1 then 78 .

 Cheers

Brent

It's pretty solid to be fair mate . Sills and inner wings need doing , and I was gonna go nuts on it with the full engine thing but having washed it all up today and realising how good original condition it's in  , I'm kinda swaying toward t.cutting up and running about on £ 90 quids worth of fully comp classic insurance haha.

Not seen  many in that colour anymore, wonder when you cut the paint will the bonnet match any better? I like the steel wheels with the whitewall tyres kind of make them seem like ATS  cup style to me. Not sure what they are off.

I think the seats are from a later model though, but could be wrong.

Very cool little car!

Love it. Deffo stay small block even if you drop in a 1300 and tune it up. Would still look original but with a few period tweaks  ;)

Just a thought
