My first Mk1 Golf -Series 1 LHD

Post

Hi All..

Newbie to the Mk1 world.

Have always wanted one and recently acquired a 1979 Series 1 mk1 golf LHD.. 3 door tin top.

The plans are to make it as original as possible, slightly lowering and some split wheels.

Body work is all straight and original paint. I am based in the UK and will register it shortly.

(removing tow bar is on list of priorities)

All opinions and comments welcome

Thanks

That does look nice and straight, the paint should polish up nicely with a bit of machining. Has it come from a warm climate ?

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your reply. It has been a German car its entire life.So not 100% on the climate. I would say pretty similar to here but it has been garaged all its life and well maintained and used in its early years.

The car will be going to my mate who is a professional detailer in the next few weeks for a full detail.

It should all come up nicely with some love. But all the panels are straight and line up well.

Need to hunt down a genuine stereo and fuel cap as i think that is the only 2 things that are not genuine.

Thanks

Welcome to the club first of all.

Should have no problem finding those parts either in the UK or in Germany. 👍

Mind you with the state of Pound and the fact it's falling faster then a lead balloon against the Euro  parts will be getting a tad more expensive in Germany.

First time in over five years if I need parts I'll look at the UK market first! 😱😉

Thank you for the welcome Mike.

Tell me about it can not believe had bad the pound has got.

They say it most likely wlil get worse for the next year or 2. need to buy all my parts asap.

Have the same issue with US dollar, i got majority of my parts for my track car in before it really collapsed.

Not the same I know but I'm a fan of great classic British comedy but I've not bought any back home for the last two years because the strength of the Pound.

Now in the last two days I've spent £100 on dvd sets and saved +35% and I'll buy some more soon as I can find the right prices.

So far a total of over 70 dvds new in box sets, should keep me busy for this winter in Austria! 😉👍

Wow cheers mate!

I didn't go this year but I was there the two years before that.
I always go for six days but before the Treffer officially starts, leaving the day before all hell brakes lose.

If you are not in love with joining in 300,000 petrol heads going mental then the week before is by far the best.

Lots of really great cars and people! 😀👌

yeah i never been for the show, always like yourself go a week in advance.

Have been going for many years now. Normally between 5 and 7 days.

But if you need something closer to the time let me know and i can bring it with me, be good to meet up.

Mk1s too slow for the 1200 mile journey so will hopefully be taking the VRT this year.

If I'm fit enough to go next year I'll take my Golf Mk6 TSI, 7 speed DSG, Highline estate with me.

Because the last time I drove 1,600 Km's in six days and it nearly destroyed my back but the funny thing is my Wife didn't complain one bit!

It's a 850 Km's round trip just to get there for me but now I want all the creature comforts the Mk6 affords me.

So not just getting old but soft as well I suppose.  😂😉👍

Here's the two boys together and the Mk6 does have a factory towbar so in theory I could trailer the Mk6 but what a pain in the butt when it comes to parking in somewhere like Velden!  😂

HAHAH you sound like me, all though if i do go i will be taking my full on stripped our caged track spec car, not very comfortable but the power puts a smile on my face.

I like the mk6 estate, recently been looking at the mK7 GTD estates, really like the look of them.

That's a lot shorter journey than mine, mine is roughly 2400 miles round trip which is around 3800 off km..

This version of the 6 with the 7 speed DSG box produces 160bhp.
Compared to the 6 gti it's only a half a second slower from 0-100kms at 7.1 seconds. What's the GTI about 228bhp or something.

In fact it's the most powerful Golf estate VW have ever built.
Add the Bilstein racing suspension plus the Bastuck race exhaust system and I've got a bit of an animal when I want it.

The best bit is my Wife drives it and can only see the comfort and not the power.

That's what I call a win, win! 😂😉👍

No diesel this one, it's a totally Eco unfriendly 1.4L petrol eater. 😂

Unbelievable economy! 👍

oh wow didn't realise it was a petrol, is that the 1.4 tfsi engine?

i need a diesel ideally for the mileage i do, they do 2.0 tdi engines with 140bhp here, which is what i currently have but want an estate.

Well I'm driving mostly town driving and some motorway 7L  per 100 Km's which is pretty good I'd say given the power under my heavy right foot.

It's that 7 speed DSG that makes all the difference.
It's got the sport mode and flappy paddles etc… But if you let the box do it's stuff it's enough for most people.

Set it up for the track, well then that's different! 😂😉👌

no track car should be economical haha
The next car will deffo have a dsg (fed up of manual for daily driving in London traffic), would want something with warranty as heard a lot of horror stories about them going bang.

Definitely lots of problems with the early 6 speed but from what I'd learned many of them were dealt with in the redesign of the 7.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that many people try to turn into F1 drivers the second they get behind the wheel of a car with full dsg.  :o

They've done it on the PlayStation, seen it on Telly so why not in the car!

We saw the same with the Audi Quattro Turbo back in the 80's, locking diff locks, turning off abs and then wondering why they'd just knackered the drive train or hit a big wall at high speed. Drivers need to understand how to use the technology correctly.

I might end up eating my words but they've built millions of them by now and I think used correctly and maintained properly you can reduce the risk dramatically.

If you get one with the right spec like I did it even gives me pleasure when I'm stuck in a traffic jam, belting along the motorway or diving down an Austrian mountain with or without snow!

As long as it's white.    :$

Post

I dont think it will be white, really want a grey one.

That sounds good maybe i read reviews of the 6 speed ones, will look into the 7 speed dsg versions.

I always thought if i was awesome on the playstation i would be amazing on the real road? is this not the case? lol :$  :$
