Newbe Gona be here for some time
Well its that time of life when you start to think about owning a classic car, i feel i'm just about ready to share the weekends with my son with our head under a bonnet, ive so many good memories of doing the exact same thing when i was a lad.
So ive lived in my house for 6 years and have seen a Golf clipper F reg convertible just down the road on the drive that hasnt budged.
I decided to knock on and ask the question, the guy didnt actually live there but his mother was eager for the car to be shifted as she wanted her driveway back, eventually we met and spoke about the car i had a a brief look but at that point i he was reluctant to sell as i think he was struggling to let it go. after a few months i decided to message him, he agreed that its got to go, i was exited, to say the least especially has he said he wanted £600 for it, i mentioned the first time that i would pay him £500 if all was well so i guess he was listening.
any way as i said its a project to smarten up and do some general mechanic and body work over the next year or so.
So tell me what you think, ive already looked at the buying guide, unfortunately i cant find any information regarding the 1.8 automatic engine and gearbox
its done 123k the guy tells me that it never missed a heart beat and assures me that a specialist looked at this a few years ago and commented on how solid it was, it has a few areas that the paint has come off but i expect that and the roof has a few repairs hear or there, but hey ho.
what you think guys
Really appreciate your expert opinions

Hello From me
I had an auto it was a brill car.
It was even better when I did the auto box oil etc.
I put up a guide in the forum in the how to section.
Gears shifted so much better.
Cabs are known for drivers side bolster wear.
If the outer bolster hasn’t worn through its worth swapping the passenger cover and base foam over.
I did a guide seat refurb Thai shoes what I did.
Roof wise well its worth knowing a bit about them.
Hood or outer cover are either pvc or fabric.
Underneath is the interliner and padding. These are often rotten by now.
White headliner tends be yellows and uncleanable.
To replace headliner though it’s a full strip down to bare frame.
I’d also check rear window frame.
Kneel on back seat looking out the window and then locate the seal as it laps over the metal frame.
Lift the seal up and away from the metal frame and run your finger under and around the bottom of the frame and around and if rust falls out it’s more than likely the frame Is goosed.
