Hello from Kent....

Hi all!!

I'm Mark and for the last 3 years I've been building my car with the help of this site so I thought there were some thanks and some lessons I've learned through the first phase of the build to pass on and to enjoy everything this site can offer!

The car in question is a series 2 gti which as far as I can tell hasn't seen the road in about 10 years between me and previous owners. I found the car out in the countryside just outside Canterbury in a shed that fro. The looks of it was just about supporting its own weight. The son had bought the car to build into a race car… Needless to say the 13 window Camper and the AC Cobra were a bit too much of a distraction and it ended up home with me after the princely sum of £500!! But then again it only came with 2 front seats and a dash so it needed some help.

This is as she sits now hopefully ready for the mot in a couple of weeks…

a build thread might follow once I can work this all out but with the day job revolving around high end cars and crash repairs there are a few ideas building for the second rebuild already…

So it's a hello from me and looking forward to seeing what trouble I can get my bank account into on here thanks to some bad influences!

Good save and welcome

Where abouts in Kent are you from?

I'm up near sevenoaks.

Thanks for the welcome guys. It's final checks and road tests on a private road this weekend just to make sure as much as I can.

As for bad influences I'm sure there are plenty but plans are already circulating for a turbo conversion on the abf lump and a full respray in a more modern subtle updated black.

I'm the other side of Maidstone in the joyous Medway towns. I work down in Tunbridge Wells  and through the summer the aim is to use the golf as much as possible. No point in just storing it that's for sure.

Hello from a fellow Kentish person… I'm a bit further round on the north coast in Herne Bay.
Good luck with the MOT! Look forward to seeing a build thread on that

Not too far away then.

You never know, we might start to get enough people in Kent with Mk1's to have a meet up.

Someone would have to come and give me a tow along though, mines in bits  :(

Ha ha. I know that feeling. Fortunately those days are now behind me with most of the rot cut out and fixed.
(I'm sure I'll find more!)

Well the test drives up and down the good old private road didn't go to plan… Car is only idling when warm and even then cutting out when coming to a stop intermittently and then to round it all of the brake accumulator/balancer in the rear passenger corner decided it didn't want to work anymore (might explain the lack of braking action!!!). So mot back on hold again :(

Anyone want to arrange a group tow to a meet?!!

I've had to be recovered to two MOTs mate, so a 'tow meet' wouldn't be massively unusual
