18yrs-old, Proud MK1 owner!

Born Petrol head! It all started about 2 years ago with Golfs for me! From the glenrothes area, fife, scotland.

About 2 mouth back and after reading so many magazines (Golf+) and owning a few smaller older Volkwagen, a decided enough is enough and visited my bank manager! With a loan accepted i had 1250 to spend on buying a mk1. Being only 18, I knew that i was aiming for a 1.3 or even a 1.5.

But being young, I ended up buy a "Fiat Light Blue" resprayed 1.5 1981 5DR. Running a 1.8 Carbed engine. AFter some investigating on my new purchase, the engine was transplated from a Scirocco. Running a weber 32/34, mk2 GTI cams, GTI down pipe onto a Jetex stainless system. When i bought it, I looked very nice, but I want to turn in back to a classic looking golf.

As you's can imagine, i only paided 850 for the car, so its was quite a "shakey" wee car. Since then, I have done:

Replaced rear lights for stock serise 2 ones (Had cleared lights)
Replaced to stupidly big 16's for a set of 14 inch Volkwagen alloys. (flat plate with cut outs around edge? Not sure of name?
Wheel bearings all-round, Rubber flange between carb and mainfold. Disc and pads, starter motor, oil, oil filter, Drive shaft seals, temp sensor, mk2 GTI seats, Welding in foot well. I also spent alot of time setting the carb up and checking all VAC pipes (Huge thanks to this site for all the info i have need since purchase).

Still needs a clutch and gear linkage.

Unfortuanlty though, last night when out for a "enjoying" drive in the wet, i ended up popping the pasenger driver shaft, at the Flange. Is this common weak points? I know the wishbones are weak, but driveshafts?

I also have a Head re-build kit for it. Now i am quite good mechinically, but i havent touched internals before (only running gear etc). Is this a big job? I would like to do this while the car is off-the-road because of the driveshaft.

We also have a 1.6 turbo diesel engine out of our caddy. I would liek to steal the full gearbox, diff, driveshafts, but I am unsure if it will fit.

It does do alot of vibrating, but i have checked all the engine mounts and everything seams fine (rubbers looked very good conditions) and all bolts were nice and tight! I have noticed thats the car makes a funny sqeak noise when you are in gear and just touch the accerlator slightly.

Never the less though, I love my mk1, and drive it as an everyday car puts such a smile on my face! That no amount of time or money could change! I will get some pictures of the car tonight to post up!
Leon.

PS. Mind the spelling, I am at my work and i haven't checked what i have typed!

good work fella, and welcome
The drive shaft out of my gti popped out too, so seems common(ish)
As for the gearbox etc, should be ok, but then I'm not well versed in these things.
What shape are the cut outs on the wheels? if p shaped they are p slots, could be the bottle cap type who knows…
get some pics up :P

So many dubs so little time, so much rust

welcome dude.

sounds like you might have pirelli p-slot wheels as benji said.

Why didnt you try and source some mk1 gti seats, they aremuch nicer than any mk2 seats!  :starwars:

Get some pictures up when you can!

The wheels are not P-slots unfortuantly!
They are seven cut outs, half mooned shapped and tappered out. Stamped "Forged" and "Volkswagen". Very smart small alloys, suit the car perfect!

The reason I have MK2 seats is my brother owns 2 MK2 GTI's as doner cars for the Caddy van, and the car came with very, very low sitting scirocco seats, which I didnt like, due to a very small steering wheel. I only make minimum wage, so i am always working on a tight budget.

The car also has crome surrounds around the windows, but i would like to put the chrome strip right up through the car, but i cant source on for a 5 door!

Oh the joys of a 25 year old car!

pablo 16v, there are the wheel, i know cause the mine and my brother 5dr_beda stole from me. where did these wheels come from, was there a modle of golf or other vw that came standard with these wheels. How rare are these wheels?

when 5dr_beda puts photos of his golf i will get him to take some of my mk1 golf gti 83 with ronal turbos and post them.

We're very much a vw pair. our old man was always a ford man it must be murder when he opens his back door and sees 2 scrap mk2 gtis, 2 lovely mk1s and a stripped caddy in his garage.

Later model cabriolet wheels I believe. Certainly the 15" versions were to be found on the Rivage models of the cabriolet.

Welcome to the site btw!

Cheers,

Drew.
