Without detailed photos I've no idea really.

I wouldn't pay 5.5 for it unless it was minty mint and 3 Door.

That is about what I paid new for my 81 LS, IIRC I paid 6,000usd.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

I've seen the car on the web, the place which sells them do have some nice cars but they are selling them at the top price they can get.

Its a nice looking car in the pictures and I don't recon there's many left. Always best to see the car in the flesh as even my car looks good in pictures till you get close to it and see 288,000 miles worth of stones chips etc….

The Golf is the basic model, not much equipment in the car, you don't even get a cigarette lighter!
The 1.6 Diesel is a slow noisy engine, with the 4 speed box it's no motorway cruiser.

My 1st Golf I had was a 1.6 Diesel but I had the LD which had a few more mod cons….

The front bumper is not straight, might just need adjustment, some of the trim is not quite straight, passengers side door trim going saggy at the top. The car is not original as it has been striped to be repainted…  Just some bartering things to reduce the price?

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Ahhh, that one.

Yeah too much money, they were selling a merc I was interested in last year…… Wouldn't let me look under it on one of their ramps, so I didn't bother even setting off to see it.

Well once again I agree with Mark as I tend to do on a number of things.

So guess we're talking about a dealer so have they got 100% proof of the mileage from day one?

All MOT's for starters and in the perfect world which we don't live in a full service history?

To me and bearing in mind we have not seen the car (God knows why not because there can't be many people looking for that type of car in the UK today) that's strong money.

How's the interior looking, the engine bay and off course the whole underside and sills of the car?

One thing you can be sure of is that the dealer unless he is cräp at his job is going to have over a grand in net profit in that price to play with. If he's seriously good even upto 2 grand.

So if you see it with a clear head and it still ticks all the boxes for you and you feel you really want it I'd hit him with £4,500 for cash.

Then don't say another word, just stand there and wait for his reaction. Next person to move will lose and remember one important thing no matter what experience one might have.

You can always go up in price when buying but you can never go down! 😉

Would be nice if you posted up the advert for us to see but good luck with it. 👍🏼

Over on this side of the pond, that is the "C" version.
Which as Mark Stated was PLAIN JANE. The door cards are correct for the C model as well.  Higher Trim Levels had carpet and the "L" model over here had padded carpet and the "LS" had a Carpet on the lower door cards and Chrome Handles and Latches on the door, with Thicker carpet and Thicker Padding.

It had Vinyl Seats, which from your add pics is incorrect as they are showing Velour.  So while it is in good shape it isn't OEM.

There was no Carpet over here it was rubber matting

Stickers are missing from the Engine Bay, that were still on my car after 20 years of ownership.

I can't see if the engine padding is still there as the "C" may or may not have had it on the bonnet as on the "C" it was optional, and on the L, and LS version it was Standard.

The Washer jug over here was mounted behind the battery in the "U" shaped bracket.  Yours had the Cabriolet type, and that should be correct for the Euro version.  Not bad looking just seems to be a Tad High, and the Trim is off that to me would get a higher price.

The Build sheet Which should be in the Boot under the Spare tire should list the interior codes that would settle the trim version, as you can look up the codes here on this site.

IIRC the "C" didn't have the waist band trim, so that has been added on as well.

Yes it's nice, very nice.

Door cards look a bit tacky with the gloss finish not done correctly.
But then why do a gloss finish in this day day and age??
That alone would make me look a whole lot deeper but I do like the car.

So my last question to you as a potential buyer is (No I'm not the seller) if you buy the car what are your intentions to drive it often or maybe only weekends for a few miles etc?

I've just seen Brian from the US has answered as well John so I'm stepping out of this one because I'm sure you're getting a system overload on this one and it's a Monday! 😉

So good luck with whatever you decide and I'm sure we'll be seeing you as a Mk1 Golf owner sometime time soon I hope! 👍🏼
