Not sure what are the best carbs mate, a friend of mine works at a garage just down the road. Its a performance peugoet garrage but they do parts for all cars. At the moment the latest craze is r1 motorbike carb conversions. I asked the other day if i can have them on my golf and i have been told its quite easy. You just need a manifold especially for the golf. They are meant to be extreemly reliable and no setting up or tweeking is required they just go straight on. Its about a ?600 kit but they sound and look mint. if your interested i will get you some information.
