I've seen pictures of one in a VW. They're a good engine, but the Duratec and Ecotec are proving to be as good if not better.

OOOO BOO BOO . No go find a 9a out of a corrado or a 6a out of an audi ( u`ll need to change the sump over on the audi) . Speak to piper cos they have the profile for a very special set of limited edition corrado cams , but dont put them any where hear the head until its gas flowed . NEVER put lairy cams in a std 16v vw head !! Ull be down on power . Ull also need a kent cams vernier pully for the inlet cam cos the timing vernier the belt runs round only dials in the exhaust cam . Vw cams are tied together by a chain unlike the vx engines . They are a good lump but common lets keep things in the family please . The 9a is a 2.0 16v by the way and you will see over 170bhp with that set up . Good luk

As good as the XE is I wouldnt say its worth it…stick to VAG, less engien mount hassle etc, you can use off the shelf parts for most 'normal' VAG engine conversions into mk1s

but you are never gonna keep up with a xe with 170bhp. a set of 45 carbs on an xe gives 185 and upto 300 is attainable. there is a thread on clubgti about one i think. i have one in my sports racing car producing about 250bhp and i spent about ?2500 to get this including the engine. i have just bought a steel crank and rods to up the power and make it rev more (10000rpm!)

Fair point , 9a`s is what alot of the vw cup boys use with throttle bodys on so they canny be bad . I just think its best to use all vw equipment possible . Your car must sound like a motorbike and be a hell of alot of fun . I know a bloke whos buildin up an older shape corsa thats gonna be road legal but as close to race spec as possable and hes using one with throttle bodys , reckons he spent about 5k on his lump but it got pinched from f1moto a little while ago

I reckon if you want to stay VAG you should be looking at the N/A 20v from a passat, a 1.8 iirc, but there might be a 2.0 in an audi?
should be a good rival for an xe
at set of cams, and ITBs, would be a good start…

could get pretty expensive though as theres not alot of tuning bits made for them, which is where the xe starts to look very good for ease and minimal expense of tuning…

A LOT of work has gone into this…

Still, it shows it can be done. Also, depends if you want power or do you want your vw to be vag? The kr/abf/9a lumps can only dream of getting similar power for the money involved.

A red top as standard would be around 160 bhp. A 6A or 9A with KR cams would be around 150-155 bhp on k-jet. Why go to all the effort?

Yes the red top is more tuneable, but for the hassle to fit it you might as well go 20VT.

wouldnt do it meself, dont like the idea of a vauxw. just defending a considerably better engine.
