Hi
Yes both of these methods are possible as long and you carry out the right mods to your motor as in lowering the compresion ratio.
im just about to mount a new mini cooper supercharger on to my golf mk2 8v and will prob br useing a spacer plate and 2 head gaskets to lower the compresion slightly.

get a new gasket or spacer plate made up out of copperor aluminium or something you can get them from here was a good chap when i spoke to him and knew what he was on about you could always try a rotrex supercharger which is a centrifugal blower seen some good results on my work placement using them here

oh yeah if your gonna do either of those forced inductions make sure you've got a healthy motor ;)

If the car runs 81mm bores, i'd advise S2 piston as they are forged and lower the c/r nicely without having to mill pistons or stack head gaskets.

If this is in a Mk1 GTI you could consider going a different route.

The later Mk2 GTI's were sold in Germany with supercharges fitted as standard, sadly the GTI G60 never came over here but it was basically an 1800 8v motor with a supercharged that put out 160bhp as standard and with a change of managment chip and pulley wheel, 190bhp.

Now whilst these cars weren't available over here their cousin, the Corrado G60, most definately was so why not try and find a complete engine, supercharger and loom from such a car and bolt it into your Mk1?  Its been done a few times before and as the whole setup was designed by VW to run together, there would be no need for the head to come off or any machining to be done.  You'd probably find the reliability marginally better that a "home brew" forced induction setup too.

Just a thought…

My mates got a Corrado G60 project with a fully rebuilt engine and charger… engine's been sitting in his garage since i've known him ready to go in!

every time i see him I ask to buy it or get his car finished!  :banghead:
What a waste

G60 lump would be the easiest and IMO best option

Ok I've posted under my quest for capacity thread put I'll put it on hear too as it's pretty relevant.  :D

I've got a reconditioned Audi 2.0 litre short block engine (that?s been converted for a MK1 1800 GTI). I also have a Audi 5 cylinder throttle body, warm up regulator, TSR pack A head (1600 solid lifter) and a kent gs2 cam all boxed up and gathering dust  :|

I would like to put these to good use but have a few questions….

1. Is converting an 1800 headed mk1 to fit a my 1600 TSR head an easy job…. what needs to be done?

2.i) Would a VW 8v diesel turbo manifold fit a 1600 mk1 gti head? (they look similar to the turbo technics manifold??!)

ii) If so could this be used a different turbo be bolted to it?

iii)What would be good to use?.. something like a T3???

iv) What else would I need for such a conversion ?..a suitable intercooler and pipe-work?

Ok so now I'm thinking turbocharged 2.0 litre 8v …….

We know we can use a spacer to lower the compression or machine the piston crowns……

Now I'm sure I've read somewhere you can change pistons over from say a g60 engine and use them with a longer throw crank from a diesel. Does anybody know what the crack is here? Surely this would increase to capacity too hmmmmm ???.

Streve and Mr V you guys might know :D …..

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D
