TSR engines

hi guys thinking about getting a few more horses for my 81' 1.6 gti.
i've always fancied a TSR Silverstone conversion (2.1 8v kicking out 165bhp!) its not cheap though at ?3230 plus upgrading everything else for that matter. After talking to them i told that this engine is about 100kg heavier then the standard 1600 gti and produces 55bhp more and alot more talk (sorry can't spell it the correct way). has anyone had one installed or any TSR engine, was you happy with the result. Is it worth it?
Big boys toys do a 1900 big bore engine alot cheaper ?1450 fitted i think with 135bhp, anyone had one of these? any good?

Don't know what to do my engine has head gasket gone and sounds like the tappets need doing also, what is the cheapest and best all round package? was told by TSR that i could'nt do a 16v conversion on my 1600 block? and they seem like hard work to me not being any good with electrics and that.

thanks for the help Gurv

hello, ?3200 is a lot of money to spend. have you priced up the cost of rebuild your own engine but maybe uprate cam, ported head ect.? probably won't make 165bhp but might work out cheaper. depends what budget you want to work .

Mk1 2l TSR G60.  .getting. There twice as fast

Mk1 lhd diesel…….getting. There for half the cost

mate in my opinon thats too much money to pay for the conversion. at the moment you have a 1.6 8v and you wanna pay over 3 thousands pounds for a 2.1 8v???????????

dont get me wrong TSR are a reputable company and im sure your engine will be the dogs danglers. but have you thought about a 16v upgrade??

you can pick the engine up for not too much these days or you can pick up a whole donor car for under 500 pounds if your lucky. then all your gonna need is a company (because it sounds like you cant do it yourself) to put it in. that should cost between ?400 - 700 i guess from professionals. that leaves you at under ?1,500 for a 16v upgrade which is considerbaly more tuneable than the 8v block!!

just my opinon mate…

hi guys thanks for the feed-back, the only thing with the 16v conversion idea (using a donor engine) is that the engine will be more than likely in need of some work itself possible even a rebuild. That will of couse add to the cost. I've just been talking with Big boys toys in lakside about their 1900 engine which is ?1450 fitted with 130+bhp (similiar out put to a 16V CONVERSION?) the guy i spoke to said he could fit a rally cam instead of the fast road one it comes with for the same price.

What should i do go with the donor 16v idea or go with the 1900 fully rebuilt option (they do a 2.0 option also for ?200 more)

if i were you i'd go to dubshack or dubsport. for ?3250 you'll be lookin at 200bhp… much better!  :D

or you could get hold of a smashed up mk3 gti 16v NOT A MK2!!!!! for say ?350 and do a full conversion, that way you have virtually everything you need other than suspension and subframe (more or less) and you'll crack 150bhp no problem.

i bet all in you'd be lookin at ?2000

thats sounds more like it a good deal, (in my opinion!   )

keep us updated with whatever you choose to do. i love hearing about things like this.

p.s i paid in total ?783 for my 1.8 8v to be fully re-built. it is being delivered at my house (FINALLY) next weekend. but, i changed my mind and am going in a different direction so the engine, wiring loom and re-conditioned gearbox will be up for sale soon so keep an eye out  8)

If you're going with the rally cam, check it out well first!! A mate of mine years ago had a race engine in a mini - went like an absolute rocket but had to maintain 2500-3000 rpm or it would stall!! (Bit noisy and stupid looking at the traffic lights! 8O )

Keep us posted

I had a go in a friends 1.9 TSR conversion and it was rapid! He spent over ?3k on it altogether and still had teething troubles. It's a lot of cash to shell out when you can probably do a different conversion for much less.

Good point, last year on ebay there was a stunning MK1 gti in Helios Blus, shiny split-rims etc. Looked real nice and with a well done 16V conversion. Can't recall the BHP but sure it was 150BHP+(??) as plenty mods.

I'm sure it sold for the ?2500-?3000 mark.

Yep I have a TSR pack A head for sale for a 1600gti (unused condition!). To buy from TSR they are ?588.

I'm after ?280 for it

"The first stage in head improvement and the ideal starting point for fast-road conversions. This head is reconditioned as for the standard head then expertly gas flowed with valves and valve seats re-profiled for optimum gain.
Pack A heads are available for all sizes of carburettor and fuel injected engines up to 2 litres and can run with the appropriate unleaded fuel. "

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D
