MK1 Golf Brake Upgrade Information Needed

hi all, got my self a non gti mk1 golf, and the braking seems very poor, i'v looked in to upgrading these and have been told to go down the 256 brake setup route. However i still want to run 13inch wheels, so best bet would be to use the brake setup from the mk1 golf GTI. Can anyone list or create an outline of what parts i need to carry this upgrade. Is it possible to add a mk2 16v servo/master c to the GTI setup?

Any help would be great, as the roads are gettin very wet.

Thanks in Advance

You're right, if you want to stick with 13s then the biggest you can go is the standard GTi setup, which is 239mm discs.

Have a good read through this

right thanks for that, so am i right in saying go out to my local gsf/euro car parts, and buy some disks, pads, calipers for the GTI and put them on?

Also the servo/master would i need to put one in from the gti also? How difficult is it to swap a 16v servo (as theres one on ebay going). A mate told me the brake lines would need to be redone? Can any 1 shed some light on that.

Thanks.
(sorry i'm a novice to mechanical aspects of a car).

If you upgrade the master cylinder and servo, go for the Passat 16v ones as opposed to the Golf Mk2 16v ones - the Passat m/c has 4 outlets on it like the Mk1 does, but the Mk2 only has 2, so you need to add some T-pieces to it.

You should be able to buy the Passat servo and m/c, and the discs and pads straight from GSF.

For the calipers and carriers, I'd go for second hand items. Try Crazyquiff on here…

the brake FAQ page is a good place to start

Passat 16V M/Cs dont all have 4 outlets, mine only had 3.

cheers mate had a look, going to try some of the stuff 2maro with the car, if it still slacks then going to try an upgrade, also 1 more question can any 1 tell me what servo is in a mk1 golf 1.3 as it appears the last owner told me he had fitted that in the early years. Arent the mk1 1.1 servos same as the 1.3's?

Another way to improve the braking is to alter the pivot point on the pedal, making the pedal longer. This will create more braking force in the pedal thus increasing the braking power. If you have a welder this can be done really easily by redrilling and moving the tubey thing up.

This will make more difference than upgrading to gti discs and pads, however as mentioned in previous post the master cylinder and servo is the best upgrade first, and when done with the pedal modification will result in an exceptional difference.

I know this because I studied automotive engineering at uni for four years, some people will say that it will make no difference. I tell you now that they are wrong and probably just repeating what they have heard!!

Try it you might like it!!
